I Went to the Rosses

I went to the Rosses on a visit
And I gazed out at the sky
Around the islands to the north
Like a doe with a hound in pursuit
Everyone around the bay would say
When I came down to the quay
“I can tell by your demeanour
That you're being hunted down.”
I met an attractive young girl
And when I approached her, she spoke sharply
“If you're a man who interferes with young women
I wouldn't praise your trade too highly.
I saw a man on the mainland
Walking barefoot yesterday
And I think you're that young man
Who has a search party on his trail.”
We fell into weariness and sorrow
And I asked the kind young woman
“Where might we might get a drink
That would lift our moods and cheer us up?”
“There's a small pub by the roadside
Where they always keep a drop on hand
Go there and knock on the table
And it won’t cost you a penny.”
We weren’t long [there] making music
Before a crowd gathered in the house
Every man had a glass in his hand
To celebrate the pair of us
There were bottles aplenty to go around
[As] there was no shortage of drink in that area
And if I drank a gallon of O’Donnell’s wares
I’d easily cover my tab
I went into the tavern
[But] I was nervous enough about sitting down
Afraid the search party would arrive
And that the young woman would be taken from me
When we had everything arranged to our liking
And I thought I could relax
She said, "Keep on singing
And you won’t have to pay a penny."
When we let go of our weariness and sorrow
The young woman asked me
“Where do you live during the day
When you’re at home?”
“I spend a lot of time drinking in the pub
I don’t save a penny’s worth for food
Whatever I earn during the day
I spend on pleasure at night.”
