Yuánfèn

I came across a string of translation requests, all with yuánfèn in their titles. This ultimately prompted me to start this collection.

Yuánfèn is one of those terms that is resistant to being translated, with very limited permeability across cultures. Explaining it takes some effort, though still far less onerous than translating it. Somewhat ironic though unsurprising to see translation requests; it is a popular theme for songwriters, especially in Chinese and Japanese (to my very limited knowledge so far).

For a while, these requests seemed impossible until I realised that the term is already absorbed into the English language along with the likes of "kowtow, qi, kungfu, fengshui, and so on, though arguably these are far more readily translated.

I hope this is just a start...

Is there a term for 緣份 in Korean? A few dictionaries (cloud and paper) appear to show words that appear to be destiny (운명) when tested back and forth (命運). The same with Thai and Napoli apparently.

Would love to learn about this if someone is prepared to shed some light on this. Thanks
