La Paloma, Goodbye

In the evening, my mother used to sing to us when I was a kid
the story of a lost boat and a white bird.
One day, the boat headed right out into the ocean
and alone, her heart full of love, a girl waited.

The sailor told her: "Do not forget I love you."
Through winter and spring, she still waited.
She saw a white bird land next to her.
It carried a few words in the fold of its wing.

La paloma, goodbye.
Farewell, I love you.
My life goes elsewhere but do not feel heartache.
Oh, my love, goodbye.

La paloma, goodbye.
Farewell, I love you.
My life goes elsewhere but do not feel heartache.
Oh, my love, goodbye!

She clasped against her heart the beautiful white bird.
Both of them headed right out into the ocean.
Love never dies—I saw two doves
flying towards the sea as night fell.

Thanks!

"La paloma" is the Spanish word for a dove or pigeon. This is an adaptation of a Spanish song (a type called habaneras) composed in the 1850s and interpreted since then in many different languages. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Paloma
