Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine.     Stand With Ukraine!

ただ泣きたくなるの (Tada nakitaku naru no) (English translation)

Just Feel Like Crying

Versions: #1#2
When I sit down in front of your room...
Somehow I feel calm, as if the door is an entrance lead to love
If you meant it when you said you're grateful I was ever born...
Then you should always hold me tight
I wonder how can I open the door (*to love) ...
And how the night will end
I just feel like crying...
...because I love you, but in my heart I always...
...want to give you warmth fonder than love
Though I can hardly see you
My friends are getting married one after another
That's the reality, ah, my dream seems harder to reach
No matter how long should I wait, no matter how hard it gets...
Day and night, I will always...always longing for you
Just so I won't cry...
I'll be strong, and if I'm strong then the dream I always have,
...the wish to open the door will be fulfilled
Though we can hardly meet
I just feel like crying...
...because I love you, but in my heart I always...
...want to give you warmth fonder than love
Though I can hardly see you
thanked 1 time

Released in 1994, this song reached #1 in Oricon chart and became her highest selling solo song with 1,048,000 sales (Miho has another song with even higher sales, but that was a colaboration with other band).

This song isn't just random Oricon #1 ranked song, so I need to explain the detail. Not all Oricon #1 ranked songs are equal. Sometimes a singer was lucky to released their song when there wasn't too many strong competitor so they can reach #1 easier. In some case, a song reached #1 because of the singer's hype, not because their song is good, so as the hype die down fast, their song too won't last too long on top of the chart and will plunge down before it can accumulate high sales.

That's not the case with this song. At that time this song need to competed with the songs of B'z (a rock duo, singers with highest sales in Japan history, even until today nobody can match them) and SMAP (boyband Kudo Shizuka's husband belong to; it used to be biggest boyband in Japan until early 2010s). All song will eventually fall down from the chart, but this song fell really slow and steady while kept accumulating sales; in total it lasted 18 weeks before it totally disappeared from Oricon top 100. This song has been tested against the biggest competitors she could ask for. It also has accumulated a very high sales. This is an example of a very high quality Oricon #1 ranked song.

This song was used as an OST for her drama:

Her live performances:

Singing this song in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1994:

After Seiko and AkinaNakayama Miho was one of the three biggest female idols (with Shizuka and Kyon2) in the 1980s. She has 8 songs that reached #1 in Oricon chart. Starting from her debut in 1985 until 1994, these are how her main singles ranked in Oricon chart:

12(debut song), 8, 4, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1("Mermaid"), 1("Witches"), 1, 2, 1, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 1, 4, 8, 1(this song), 9, 8.

That's not all, Miho has 2 singles that sold more than 1 million copies: the first one sold 1,048,000 copies (got 3x Platinum) and the second one sold 1,833,000 copies (got 4x Platinum).

In 1995 she started to decline. These days Miho focus more in acting.

Nakayama Miho VS Kudo Shizuka

The media didn't seem to portray them as arch-rival. They have co-starred in some dramas, appeared together in the same tv shows, and there's this photo. They seemed to get along well, they might even be friends.

But they have very similar data and stats. Both were born in 1970. Both got their first Oricon #1 ranked song in 1987. Shizuka has 11 Oricon #1 ranked songs, Miho has 8, but she compensate it with higher sales so in the end their total sales almost identical. Both attended Kohaku Uta Gassen consecutively from 1988-1994 (with Shizuka made one extra appeareance in 1998). Just like flame that burns the brightest before it goest out, both of their last Oricon #1 ranked songs became their highest selling songs in their career with each sold more than 1,000,000 copies; and both of the songs were used as soundtracks for the dramas they starred in. And both of them started to decline in 1995.

In the "Top 50 idols of all time" list from 2011, these were how they ranked:

13. Kudo Shizuka - 14,870,000 sales

12. Nakayama Miho - 14,970,000 sales

But newer data from Wikipedia shows that Shizuka has raised a little bit with 15,000,000 sales while Miho stays the same because she focus more in acting now. Even then, the numbers are still very close.

I used to call Miho the 3rd most popular female idol in 1980s and I was wrong. The 3rd biggest female idol in 1980s position should be... jointly owned by both of them since their data are so identical.
