How about we brag a little about our own work, and appreciate someone else's?

Share a translation of your own making that you are proud of, and a translation made by another translator that you think is spectacular.

I think my best work might be either "You Are Beautiful", seeing as it got so much attention;
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/hinech-yafa-%D7%94%D7%99%D7%A0%D7%9A-%D7%...

Or "Once in a Lifetime" since I'm still proud of myself for coming up with the line 'If you're gone, you know I'm a goner'. I thought it fit perfectly and I have no idea where it came from;
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/paam-bakhayim-%D7%A4%D7%A2%D7%9D-%D7%91%D...

My favorite translation by another user is definitely "Everything Passes" by @Sahar90. Gives me chills every time I read it;

How about you? Regular smile

And this made by Μiley_Lovato: https://lyricstranslate.com/el/swag-it-out-το-κάνω-πιο-swag.html

The translations that I like the most from the ones I did are very variated. Most of the times I pick artists I like and translate their songs

Of my almost 3000 translations from Spanish to English I pick these ones:

This one because it's the longest
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/coplas-del-payador-perseguido-stanzas-pro...

This one because of the few singable translations I did, this one has consonant rhyme
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/el-muerto-vivo-living-dead-rhymed-transla...

This one for the tonguetwisting chorus, and because is a classic of my childhood
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/al-boton-de-la-botonera-chim-pum-fuera-bo...

This one because it still makes me laugh
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/mel%C3%B3n-y-melame-licky-and-lickme.html

This one was the hardest. I had to search a lot for equivalents in english.
https://lyricstranslate.com/es/41-pel%C3%ADculas-porno-41-porn-flicks.ht...

This one because of the use of the sayings
https://lyricstranslate.com/es/malditos-refranes-goddamn-proverbs.html

And all my translations of the Leo Masliah works (I'm a great fan of him). I have this collection of his tales (not his songs)
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/collection/leo-masliah-english-tales

-----------------------------------------------

Of the other translations I did I pick the translation of Despacito to Esperanto
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/despacito-malrapide.html

-----------------------------------------------

And about translations of other people, I appreciate some translations to other languages that aren't to english or portuguese, of Uruguayan artists. Specially this song.

Let me then brag about one of my Esperanto translations too. It is the song Ranevskaya by Lolita. And it was my first try. Here it is:

cool topic.

I'd say for me, it's this one here:
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/cernunnos-cernunnos.html

And one done by someone else... that's a hard one since there's so many. But the ones that come to mind right now would be @Enjovher's translations of "The Homeward Vow"; both in Spanish and Portuguese.

@Hansi K_Lauer's German translation of "In the Eve"

@Lobolyrix's German translation of "Fakamatala Langi"

And also @evfokas's English translation of the Greek National Anthem.

That's really nice, but what about other people's work? Is there a translation that you like made by another user? Would be even better to point out their name.

God, your translation is beautiful, and seems like A LOT of work. Thank you for sharing Regular smile And thank you for all the shout-outs to other users! That's what I wanted to see.

Recently I've come across this translation by an unregistered user: https://lyricstranslate.com/cs/Kdepak-ty-ptacku-hnizdo-mas-Kdepak-ty-pta... It's such a tremendous piece of, well, poetry I dare say (and at the same time it's very faithful), that it is a real pity he (or she) is not a member of this community…

Wow, it was my favourite song when I was a very very small kid. It's a great piece of poetry and music. And the film itself is lovely. But the translation is awful. It doesn't give credit to the song. I may make it into an English singable one day to remember the sweet days Regular smile

Small? Like...how small? You mean...young, right?

The translation that I brag about is (unfortunately) in Arabic Sad smile

Amr, will you post it? It deserves an Arabic translation. I'll make it into a nice English singable. Regular smile

Hmm, why do you think it's awful? I guess the author found a perfect balance between faithfulness to the original (he's saying basically the same), while keeping it quite poetic at the same time….

The translator gives three options at a time. Mods should see to it and edit this translation. Besides, the message isn't clear. What I mean is that such a sweet song needs a better translation. Regular smile

This, for example
Why, you've scarcely felt vulnerability.
Barely, seems to me. ????????

I wish I knew what it means

It is the translation of Lensky's letter. I brag that I made a translation for a poem of Pushkin. Moreover, though I'm not a poet, I made a measured rhymed translation.
Who knows, maybe one day I'll translate the whole Евгений Онегин. Who knows!

Aha.. and you obviously think the message of the original lyrics is perfectly clear Teeth smile The three options are a bit irritating and should not be there but that's just a negligible fault IMO. By the way, the movie is indeed fantastic, most of all thanks to the actor, who's playing Cinderella.

For that, Amr, I'll learn Arabic script at last - to read your translation of Евгений Онегин! Good luck with that! Regular smile

The literal translation of the lines you mentioned above are: "You know very little about decoys yet, too little it seems to me" Otherwise it really is very faithful to the original lyrics, even though it's in rhymes…. But we have gone a bit off topic with this.

Yes, I've sorted out the basic meaning of the first stanza.

Where is your nest, little bird,
It's hidden in the deep
You know little of traps
Looks like very little

Except for the second line you're right - it means something like "a shelter and a sanctuary". But shouldn't we move this discussion to the translation, where it belongs?

I remembered about one translation of mine, which I would really like to brag about, but since it's been stayed unnoticed in months I thought it's worhtless. I tried to make a rhymed and singable translation, and I worked on it for a long time and really hard, but... It's interesting how it happens sometimes, at least it happened to me. You do your best making a translation and when it's done you believe it's a bestseller or something and you're gonna got lots of thanks, but after you publish it - nothing happens at all, no thanks, no comments... So maybe it's really just some trash... So if you're interested in reading a Hebrew-to-Russian translation, and if by any chance you got a free minute and don't mind to look at it, then here it is, I would appreciate your opinion:

Shopping for compliments? When people view ones work, they don't bother thanking. If you feel good about your work, and you obviously do, it should be enough. If you ask people to look, they will give you feedback: mine is that your version was quite good and I enjoyed your translation.

BlackSea4ever, you are the first one who thanked me for that translation, and I really appreciate that! And I ain't shopping for no compliments, I'm just trying to say to people that I have a translation, which I like myself and it is unnoticed, but I worked on it hard and this thread is a real chance for me to ask people for their opinion.

You know, I discovered it because you made a comment I saw - otherwise, I would have never seen it.
I have an idea that we need to create our own collections max 10 -15 items IMHO and tie it to profile publically (similar to favorites which are private)
Do you like this idea?

Sorry - I picked English-to-German-translations:

This is my favourite translation. Actually it took a lot of helping of the songwriter. I've thought this would be so easy and I just wanted to get sure about one thing - and all the time he told me "no, you got that wrong"...
https://lyricstranslate.com/en/lost-moon-den-mond-verloren.html

My favorite translation by another user is Magicmulders "Cry Wolf"/"Schlagt Alarm" - I guess I'm a fan of him in some kind of way:

Even if it's English to German, thank you for sharing Regular smile

I thought this forum died and no one wanted to add anything. I thought people would be delighted to share their favorites and turned out I was wrong. So this is a double 'thank you' for adding more to this forum.

Oh, thank you so much.

First I thought: "Brag about your own work? But I'm not proud of any translation..." But it got me thinking and I liked your idea after awhile and I thought come on "Lost to the Moon" is really special to me. It showed me that you can't translate without understanding the meaning of the lyrics.

I hope this forum won't die - actually this is a great idea you had.

I think it's a wonderful forum. I didn't have the confidence of my own work to share, but I will gain the courage and do it. Lol. Soon. Now.

Tom's translations of Brassens never cease to amaze me. An erudite work made with love, patience and care.
Among many examples, the sweet and sour Petition to be buried on the beach at Sète or the hilarious The patriots.

I love dedicated translations. They are like small windows opening to other cultures.
Even a rather funny song can give you an idea of what life was like in other eras and countries. Some even gave me insights on my own country.

There are far too many such translators to give credit to them all, and with four languages I'm barely grazing the surface of all that can be found here.

As for my favourite own work, I would say the translations I like best are not my own but the result of a collective effort. This one is a good example, I think. I don't know how the result looks, but the process of grasping this elusive Russian and shaping it into English thanks to patient explanations of native speakers of both languages was a real joy.
