Pritcha o Pravde i Lzhi

Parable about Truth and Lie

Delicate Truth dressed in the beautiful clothes,
To the pitiful, orphans, and cripples to bring some delight.
Coarse Lie this Truth to its home once lures
Like: hey, why don't you stay with me overnight!

And trusting Truth went to sleep like a baby,
Drooling and smiling happily in her dreams.
Sneaky selfish Lie for herself pulled the blanket,
Bit into the Truth and, till quite satisfied, had her fill.

Lie then got up and made ugly faces -
Woman like woman, nothing special here to behold?!
There isn't any difference visible between them,
Of course, that's if you view them in nude, I'm told.

Golden ribbons from braids were cunningly taken,
Lie took Truth's attire - such as luck that it happened to fit.
She took her watch and money, along with any id she may need.
Lie, maliciously spitting, roughly cursed, and finally split.

It was in the morning when Truth realized what was stollen
And surprised, she looked at herself, business-like, -
Someone already somewhere got hold of the black tar,
Smeared clean Truth, but it could have been worse.

Truth kept laughing when they threw at her stones
- it's all Lie, and what she wears is my own clothes!...
Two "blessed" policemen 1 were making reports
All the while cursing Truth with a string of bad words.

Bitch they called her, and worse than bitch
They smeared her with tar, sicked the dogs after the witch.
So there wouldn't be a trace of her stay,
She is to be evicted, sent away within a day.

That report ended with the hurtful tirade
(By the way, Truth was charged with extra, if not her own, offense):
They say, some scum calls herself Truth,
But she got so drunk that she awoke in the nude.

Naked Truth wept, swore her innocence, denied accusations,
For a long time, she was sick, vagabond, penniless.
Meanwhile, dirty Lie having a thoroughbred stollen,
Galloped away on the Arabian's long and thin legs.

Some odd-ball till this day still fights for Truth, -
Although, his speeches, they carry little worth.
- Pure Truth, the time of her triumph will be certain to come,
If only she dared all that bold-faced Lie has done.

Frequently, sharing a bottle with brothers,
You won't even know where you'll crash for the night.
You might lose your clothes - this is pure truth, friends!
Lo and behold, your pants are worn by the underhanded Lie,
Lo and behold, your watch tells time to the treacherous Lie,
Lo and behold, your noble steed carries the insidious Lie.

Deanna, I think that's a wonderful translation, thank you. It shows you care and that's above all in translating. I feel a bit uncomfortable with the word Falsehood. The Truth and Falsehood are two main characters. They are personified but I'm having a problem with seeing anything with "-hood" as something real. The suffix is too abstract for me. What about a good old Lie, it can do a lot of things and may be of different types. It gives more idioms and collocations to play with like "Грубая ложь" Bold-faced Lie (as opposed to Truth in a beautiful attire). But I may be imagining things as usual Regular smile The translation is real good, I mean it! Thumbs up

Always happy for your input. I started with LIE... It didn't sound good to me - I'll ponder on it.
Love your suggestion of attire - working it in.

Here we need a sneaky, slimy little bastard that can lurk, creep from behind and leave you stripped off everything. To me, it's only a lie. Btw, if you get this sweet ^^ couple in the upper case, you don't need any articles with them. It's like their proper names. (naked Truth - brazen Lie.)

In first stanza, isn't блаженный = юродивый? Like a "God's fool" or something like this? I believe, "pitiful" is an adjective, but you need a noun there.
And Falsehood sounds a little weird to me too. It's programmer's thinking - true/false, but here it is Truth/Lie Wink smile
Also, протокол - when you say "reports" it sounds like they were doing some research or school projects. We know that it was an investigation report, but it is not obvious to others. Maybe, at least in footnotes you should explain, what kind of report you're talking about.

Deanna, I'm still confused by the word order. Do I understand it correctly because it's acceptable in English or I simply understand the original and make allowances? I can't figure that out. This one is questionable.
Falsehood took Truth's clothes which happened to fit. Money took and her watch, along with all identifications
A teacher's nitpicking
If only she did all that the Falsehood has done.
Actually, I'm enjoying this translation very much. Regular smile

Thank you all!
Just know how grateful I am that you didn't tell me to delete my translation and ask the new guy, MZ, to do it.
That would have been simply pitiful. Lol.
Just for that this long-ago programmer (горбатого могила исправит?) is changing Falsehood to Lie.

Phil Ambro    Fri, 07/12/2018 - 18:57

Oh BlackSea! Would his translation really be as pitiful as mine, if I were to have done it? LOL I think not. And, in his defense, it does sound better in English to say "lies" here, just for euphony's sake. "Falsehood" sounds Iike you're in court before a judge on a witness stand. Just sayin'. No! I'm not taking sides. I love your translations! Hugs. Regular smile

Just so you know, Michael Z, new to LT is awesome and my comment meant that I feared they will ask him to replace my feeble work. I was the first one to read and thank him, but he, just like St Sol, totally ignores me. This means, I must work harder to earn a nod from them...

Phil Ambro    Fri, 07/12/2018 - 19:31

Kudos to you and your pursuit of peer recognition. One day, when I learn about pig flowers, maybe I can pursue some recognition for myself. But that day is long into the future. LOL

BlackSea4ever    Fri, 07/12/2018 - 19:36

Don't play with my words. Devil smile
I wasn't looking for recognition - I was afraid I wasn't comparable... You know, we girls, like to be thought of as diamonds of the first water...not second best imitations...lol

Brat    Fri, 07/12/2018 - 19:35

Just so you know, he's recently discovered LT as a new place to publish his numerous translations and is now VERY busy doing this. You can search for more of his translations on the net, if you wish...
