Today is my first birthday being on LT and I'm not liking my birthday one bit! So far at least 10 or more of my "translations" are suspected to be used with Google Translate which could be because I didn't have enough "sources"? It's only a short matter of time before the user suspects ALL OF my translations for using Google Translate (source sited or not) and I'll be banned or kicked off of LT (which may be what the user wants) so this could very well be my last post on here. This also means that I'm probably going to be online all day (maybe night too) because if I go offline for even a half hour, I'm sure I'll be banned before I even know it. If the user wanted to " help me" then they are NOT "helping me" learn from my mistakes by saying "used Google Translate"!

This wasn't MY idea of how I had wanted to spend my 24th birthday 🙁

See, you've brought this upon yourself. It raises suspicion adding a translation of Dutch or Italian lyrics when you don’t even know Dutch or Italian. I know, you just surely wanted to help – but this looks more than guessing and not like translating. See, anybody can translate by using GT – but a good translation goes far beyond this.

I'd like to wish you a happy B-Day though you're unhappy now. Ask yourself where you can contribute to this site and be sure that you’re doing a good job.

First off Happy Birthday to you.

10 of your translations match what GT outputs and to be honest, some of your translations look like guess work rather than translations. From your comments and what you've selected in your profile, you're a native English speaker but your translations to English are awkward (someone translating from one language to another when they are a native English speaker would know how to structure a translation into English).

The user you speak of doesn't have some personal vendetta against you, we always tell users not to take things personally because if we suspect someone of using a machine translator, we will point it out and look into it. You keep saying you'll be banned, what are you worried about if you say these translations are yours? if they're yours, then you shouldn't (and wouldn't) be worrying for nothing.

First of all, happy birthday among us and thank you for your help in the site.

I would just like to say that I am not saying "Translation made with Google Translate" for no reason. You can't say you didn't used Google Translation, I gave a comparison for some of them and in your English translation of Menelik's song, there were still the French words that Google Translate couldn't translate. And I was nice, because I could have said the same about the translations you also used Google Translate but changed a few words. And as phantasmagoria said, I have nothing against you, I would have done the same with any other user, because translations made by machines are prohibited.

Besides that, you have always been kind, friendly and helpful, and always wanted to contribute to the site. The only thing we're asking you now is to stop using Google Translate to translate music, then everything will be fine ;)

The amusing thing about Google Translate - at least from my point of view - is that sometimes when I've thought that I may have translated something totally wrongly and have used Google Translate to see what it would do: every time it produced what I had done I changed it because I knew it must be wrong. Eevery time Google translated to something different from what I had done I kept what I had produced, beause I reckoned it was probably right. Of course that was decades go (well, maybe less that time ago than that) before GT ever got anything right.

There may be people who would expect Google Translate to get it right, but I just assume that unless it is dealing with something unbleleivably simple (in which case I won't be asking GT anyway) it will have got it wrong (it often gets it wrong then, too).
I was always amused that the English verb "pants" meaning "breathes hard with quick, short breaths" was alwats translatd as "pantalones"(trousers) or an equivalent in any language. Last time I looked it was still doing the same in translation to many languages, but no longer all - a tiny improvement in 15 or more years.

We've already had some similar conversation about this in the past:

Google or not Google – sorry, you’re translations are just not good enough. Maybe you should just try to do songs that are easier to translate. WwWw gave you a really good advice. Please think about it one more time.

Hey first Happy Birthday to your 24th and second to be honest I learned a bit out of MY OWN mistakes and wanted to say it's really a no good to use GT for complete Translations it's only good for single words and then checking twice or thrice or using online Dictionaries they are sometimes better ex: dict.leo.org or for German to English words linguee.de

That I just wanted to say have a nice day and always tell yourself: Everyone makes mistakes you're not alone

Nice Greetings

Your Achampnator :)

Well, I too had problems with a bunch of people saying my translations suck, and not giving any constructive criticism on how to make them better. There are a lot of people on here who just criticize, but don't help.
I hope you don't let them get you down. However, if you use Google translate as a starting point, it's ok. But you have to make it good. Leaving a google translation, is not doing a translation. You can't just cut and paste from GT. Not only is it unnecessary, because anyone can do it, and so why bother with this site? But also, this site is meant to give good translations, not the gibberish that GT spews out.

You're obviously an English native, so I suggest that you translate songs from OTHER languages INTO English. You'll immediately see how bad Google translate is. And, you can clean up a GT and make it good.

By doing that, everyone will be on your side, as long as the GT isn't absolutely dreadful. Which in my case (trying to translate from Russian into English) often is.

So, I wish you a happy birthday. And, I hope you'll keep trying to improve. There are people on here who will help.
As for posting GTs. Don't do that, it's completely unnecessary. Anyone on this site has can GT themselves, and get the same bad translation.

Now, if you're translating and NOT using GT, and your translations are bad, ask for proofreading help. Some proofreaders are brutal. But, others will help you. I found that to be true.

So true!!! GT is better at modern words that my old soviet dictionaries! And, it's quicker. But, wow!!! It makes some disastrous blunders. One fun thing to do, is write something in your native language. Translate it into another language with GT, then translate it back into your own language. Sometimes the results are hilarious. So, just keep in mind that GT is NOT (yet) perfect. They are trying to make it better, but it still has many flaws. ;)

Phil,
It's not that your translations sucked, but that you made outrageous assumptions without much research and, especially given that you attempted translation of some deeply Russian rooted poems, without knowing subject or poet. What's admirable is your persistence and willingness to fix things.

HAPPY 24th, Emily, and many happy returns! Good luck!

Thanks for that BlackSea. So kind of you to say. I have mended my ways, and I am much more understanding of the very harsh criticism I received. But, yes, my translations DID suck, and I'm getting better, thanks to help given by many people, and you, although I was rather mean about criticism. Trying to get over that, and I apologize. As for this man's problems, it's best to start off small. We all want to start off GRAND, but we all have to learn how to crawl, before we can run. The falling down as we take our first baby steps is the hardest to handle. After that, it's all just learning.
So, I hope this man doesn't give up. Seems like he has the passion to do well, if he just relaxes a bit, and do as I did, take words of advise as what they are, so that he can get better, and I hope he will become a better, and perhaps great translator on here.
Hugs BlackSea.

BTW... You can make great friends on here too. So, don't give up! :)

Hi Emily, grattis på födelsedagen!

I just wanna add that if you need any help with Swedish you can ask me. It's better that you ask for help than try to use GT, in my opinion.

To anyone making suggestions that you can use GT but to just "clean it up" - don't make those suggestions, it's still against the rules. Any users caught having used GT will have their submissions unpublished.

It's not just against the rules, it's plain foolish... If you're not proficient enough to make the translation by yourself (of course using dictionaries for words one is unsure about how to translate) you should leave the translation for someone else to do...

I'm not even proficient in English! I'm not proficient in ANY language not even my OWN language! I keep telling people that I have reading comprehension problems and that's why my English is so awkward! 😭😭😭😭😭

I can't translate anything right and I can't type anything right either! I've ALWAYS struggled with writing and grammar and I have only been getting worse at it!

Why did I even join this site in the first place and thought it was actually a good idea for me!? 😭😭😭😭😭

It is what it is. I wish I was 24. Lol.
Look, I can't remember a word after I read it. So I read it 50 times... I practice for hours and live with the fact that my English is imperfect...and so is my Russian... I forgot most of Italian and there is no trace of German...

Lol. No, not yet. I'm 18+ for the rest of my days. Most of us are unsure when translating, but luckily, there are ton of resources online. Just don't despair - push forward, do your best - after all, when you feel slightly better one day, then, even better next day...then, you will realize you are no longer 24!

Therapy - It helps some - mostly, it's up to us being honest with ourselves, heeding advice from wise people, and the secret weapon - believing in ourselves. You can do it! Your whole life is ahead!

Phil, you should be ashamed of yourself. You're the last person to complain. You take a Russian classical song or a poem, don't care a damn what it says or who wrote it and then welcome Russian users to come and correct every line, that is, to make this translation for you. If they feel offended you say those Russians are so touchy, and a bunch of people criticize you and blah-blah-blah. I've sent you a bunch of Pms asking to discuss your translation BEFORE you post it. You have many friends among Russian users. They all are ready to help but not after you've butchered it all over. It's disrespectful. And mind you, none of them give you any rating. To save you the discomfort. But you don't care. I'll show you the way you translate

I once met Grace. She was amazing. Her voice was sweet.

Recognise the song? Now come and proofread.

Didn't mean to complain. I was trying to say that I made mistakes at first and I'm trying to get better. I was trying to encourage. And yes (as I mentioned) there are plenty of people on here who help, and you can make some great friends on here. So sorry if it sounded like I was complaining.

Update: so I decided to be a pain the backside by sharing MY English translation from an Italian song after the first one was accused of using GT, then saidperson said it was OK, then one of the head admins on here unpublished it. This time around I used the same translation as I had used before but used 2 different sources to figure out where I had gone wrong. Those sources were GT (I hadn't used GT the first time but I did this time around to find out what GT had said was the English translation) and Cambridge Dictionary Italian to English online. The downside with the Cambridge Dictionary was that I had to look up the words individually WORD by WORD! Both unexpected sources, as well as me trying to move around some of the words in the English translation to see if I could NOT get almost the same English translation as GT had gotten, came up with the same English translation that I had gotten before. So I took both sets of lyrics here to LT and long story short.... well I paste the link here. Since then, that translation hasn't been reported again but I'm sure it would get reported again by somebody else in the future. (The translation had been so easy for me that I didn't even need to use any "sources")

Besides that one, I'm going to come back to the other unpublished ones to try the English translation again later into the future.
