Now that my schedule has shifted (and I can log in more frequently), how are you all passing the time during this pandemic?

At first we were all working but the world seemed to stop on March 15th here in NY. I took over a different shift for the unforeseeable future, so I still have to work. However, there's not much else to do. I lost my mind two weeks ago and did some very heavy Spring cleaning, after that I spent a few days painting before I got bored of that too. Right now I'm going from work to trying to renovate my entire room and bathroom, one piece a time.

How are people acting around you? Are the lines in the groceries stores crazy? what items has your area run out of? how do you keep yourself busy if you don't work?

I don't need to say more about how my country is doing:

I am mostly reading books and practicing guitar, because I am in quarantine and don't have much else to do, and I am considered underaged, and therefore I am not even supposed to go grocery shopping unless it's absolutely necessary.

The worst part is not being able to get any disinfectants. We take food deliveries from the supermarkets.
We pass weekend time reading, playing chess, Scrabble, and I work the same hours. For now.
My son began fostering a dog. She is adorable. I told him to be careful bringing her to us because she’s very chocolate...😋

Oof, things are going crazy here! I had to quit my job at the post office 'cause I just couldn't stand this place, and it was just in time. Ever since, I've been trying to find an online job, in translating or transcribing, but it's not so easy. Mostly because I'm afraid to do it professionally...

I mostly spend my time being useless, translating, watching movies or TV series on my laptop, reading, sleeping. I barely leave my room or talk to anyone, which is getting kind of sad. I'm just like... existing.

The government keeps giving us more and more limitations; keep a 2-meter distance from each other, never leave your house without a mask, must stay within a 100-meter radius from your home and for short periods of time only, when you go grocery shopping - do it fast, may celebrate Passover only with your nuclear family, no more than 2 people in the same vehicle, no public transportation - be it trains or buses, no gyms / restaurants / beaches / parks / cinemas / playgrounds, and so on.

About the groceries stores, luckily I believe we are... okay for now. There's one right by my house, and it was freaking terrifying to go there. They checked my temperature at the entrance, and all the cashiers wore crazy masks and gloves. But I do not recall seeing any shortages.

Also, every 3 weeks I have to take a shot at the infirmary, which means I HAVE TO LEAVE MY HOUSE AND GO TO A PLACE WHERE INFECTED PEOPLE HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN. At first, I felt ridiculous leaving my house with a mask on, but when I got there everyone else had one too. And I was just terrified to touch anything and I couldn't breathe in that mask. And of course, there was this lady sitting there at the entrance, asking me, "Have you been abroad recently? Have you came in contact with a confirmed carrier? Are you in quarantine?" and I just said, "I haven't left my house until now..." and she let me go. Enter extreme anxiety.

But I spoke with my sister on the phone today for like 3 hours which was nice :)

I’m isolated in a foreign country. My is located in 3 different countries actually, we can talk by phone but I’m totally divided and my worries every day increase. I don’t know which place, which country has the worst situation, really.
Sometimes I feel like living in a very strange situation and it seems that this don’t belong to me, yet some things I can’t to believe them. It seems that I’m living in one of those movies of wars where the persons don’t know if they could see again....I just want to return to my country.....

I read sometimes, try to make some translation, sometimes I prefer to sleep, sometimes I try to “explore” this country but...it is better not to walk outside....also I see TV series and listen music, I like the guitar...

The situation here with the groceries stores is very controlled, and it is fine....

I wish the best for everyone
To finish as soon as possible this situation. At least to control it. To start to control it..

It’s good that you are able to be in touch with your family. Try, I know it’s tough, to worry less. It’s just that being anxious is bad for you and brings you down because you neither can control nor help the situation. I found that funny skits improve my mood - find funny YouTube videos and watch them. I find that hours of following the news are horrible and one has to ensure the source of news is credible. Music always helps, doesn’t it? I’m falling in love with the old cartoons - the sillier the better.
Best wishes.

Oh, thank you, so much. I feel so lonely to night.
Yes, I can in touch with my family almost every day. It is very good for me. Sometimes, we are talking and doing our usual activities at the same time , like cooking, and it seems that the life is normal, the standard life all of us wants to do.... it is very good..
Yes, the situations are out of my hands...
Music always help.
It is a good idea about old cartoons, thank you, I didn’t think. I will look for them.

Tbh, not much has changed for me and some things might have even improved a little. Our hotel has shut on the 21 March, but a handful of us are still working (me included) to keep an eye on it. I mean, leaving a several million pound hotel unattended is quite irresponsible... Anyway, even though I'm still working, the amount of work is obviously less, so I don't get as tired as I used to and I can find more free time to do things I usually leave on a side for lack of time or energy. In these days I found more time to translate, practice some languages, write and even watch films, which is something I rarely do. I've also finished reading some comics, so I'm planning to shift my attention to some books that were waiting for someone to dust them off (whoops). I also found an excuse to move to the hotel, so my boss has allowed me to stay in one of the rooms. Can't complain about that.
Being in a rural area, the number of infections is not that high, plus there's nature all around. Weather permitting, I usually take a stroll around the lake or in the fields behind the hotel. The government still allows people to have an hour in the open air, but because there's no one but sheep here, it's way easier to stay outside without meeting a single soul. I don't even have to worry about going to the supermarket, because the hotel is taking care of the live-in staff... but even if I had to, it wouldn't be a big deal. The closest village is a 15-minute walk away and there's not a lot of people, so the measures implemented to limit the risk of infection are quite bland and keeping an eye on people is very easy for the supermarket staff. For instance, you're allowed to buy a single pack of toilet paper per person, you're supposed to keep yourself 6 feet away from other people and recently security has been allowing only a certain amount of people to get in. In both pharmacies and supermarkets, there's a line at the check-out and the cashier would ask you to stay behind that line. I haven't even seen a single person with a mask on so far (except for some cashiers, but not everywhere... I usually use the self check-out service anyway).
In general I feel extremely safe and I'm perfectly aware how lucky I am that I can still work and don't have to pay any rent (heard some people have been evicted, either because they couldn't pay rent or because they worked in hospitals and the landlord was afraid they could carry the disease... crazy times). Because of the lockdown, everything is closed, but nothing has really stopped: trains and buses still run, even if less often, and delivery companies are active more than ever. Basically everyone is still able to get what they need even without going out too much.
The only things that left me with a bitter aftertaste is the fact I lost £132 on a trip to the isle of Man (on the other hand, it could have been worse), that my very important plans for this year will be affected (I'm working on limiting the damages) and that panic is spreading way faster than the infection. It's scary how people are overreacting and, even if I acknowledge the situation is serious, such a behaviour is really counterproductive. People spreading fake news and ignoring the government's advice are doing way more damage than the virus itself. I guess common sense has become a rare virtue these days.

My family back in Italy is also doing ok for the most part. My parents and siblings live in a rural area as well, so there's no much going on, even if there you can't really go out. The police would ask you for a self-certification stating why you're going out and they're required to verify it (for instance if you state you're going to work, they'll phone your boss and ask if you're telling the truth). The fact they live in one of the least affected places helps, but my sister who lives in the city is going through worse times. The quarantine is really hard to bear for her. She doesn't go out at all and gets everything she needs delivered to her, so she's easily getting bored and craving for a normal social life. Luckily I don't have that problem...

If you want the truth, this quarantine period is not doing any good. My Master's classes were going to start on March 18, but on March 16 our state governor declared that Rio would go into a 'shutdown' mode - as I study in another city, I can't go there, not even if I were driving my own car. So, my classes were cancelled - and we have no date to start (they say it would be on April 14, but I really doubt that). It sent me into a mix of anxiety, fear and nervousness - and although I'm very patient and listening here, you should know I'm quite hotheaded in real life, so that doesn't do me any good.

There was a day where everything went bad here, as my real life boss called on me because of unsatisfactory work I did with an essay. That was perhaps the worst day so far. There were also some side issues with my personal life, but I don't want to disclose them. But it made me notice that I really need some urgent therapy, which I'm gonna look for when this s*** ends.

What made me even sadder is that our President is known for his denial of scientific studies and evidence, to the point of saying COVID-19 is 'nothing but a flu' and accusing our press and media of wreaking havoc and spreading panic to overthrow him. And things in Brazil couldn't be any better because our Ministry of Education is clearly not qualified to occupy that position - but I'll try to keep politics out of discussion. If there's something that drives me crazy is when people who had all the opportunities to study and be informed opt for nonsensical stuff and/or accusations (like saying that COVID is a plan of the Chinese government to dominate the world). I feel so out of place in this country, honestly.

In the beginning I was feeling very unmotivated and down, taking hours to do stuff I'd normally do in a few minutes, but I changed my work hours as to have some more free time for me and to occupy my mind with other things (and that's why I've been contributing more to LT recently). I'm taking some time to read for my Master's and draft my dissertation. That is helping me cope with this situation.

I hope this ends well for all of us.

Tough to keep politics out of this discussion... I think we feel out of place in every country because we are powerless to correct the obvious wrongs.

Stress always has negative affect on personal relationships. I’ll give advice from a wise collègue given to me last week: don’t forget to discount harsh words, wounded feelings, raised voices, nonsense told, unfortunate actions - everyone is under a lot of stress and will later regret these.

Grad schools here all went online. Perhaps, yours will also.

Nothing has really changed for me. I'm staying inside more than ever. Watching videos, going on social media, making subtitles for YouTube, procrastinating on my school work, translating here, playing games, try to play the piano but get stuck at this one measure... yeah, it's pretty bad. I can't get into a good routine. I want to read more books or draw or something but instantly get bored. Though it got me to playing more board games and card games, which I would recommend.

Here in Japan, people are still going out because the government's just asking them to stay home. But it might change soon because they declared an emergency. At least I hope. Masks and hand sanitizers are all gone at pharmacies, grocery stores are all good.

Stay safe to OP and you all!!

That's good, keep yourself entertained, if your parents do the shopping it's best to stay home.

I think by March 20th (in the US) there was no more toilet paper, disinfectants, wipes, gloves, masks. By the third week we ran out of eggs, shortage of milk, orange juice, feminine products.

Now most stores are only allowing 6-10 people in the store at a time, lining up people outside 6ft apart. You could wait in line for hours!

Oh I haven't picked up any books, that's a good idea. I saw on the news that people were adopting a lot of cats/dogs, it wouldn't be a bad idea to foster a dog (we already have one).

————————————————————————————

[@Thomas222] Was the job that bad? I'm actually looking into getting a postal service job but the US requires you to jump a lot of hoops to get one. I think you do a great job translating, I forgot the name of the site where you can translate professionally (documents, medical terms etc.) and get paid for it. If I find it, I'll link it.

Damn, your restrictions are harsher, wish they'd do the same here. I know it sucks but I'd rather suffer a few months than potentially getting sick and not surviving it (I have several medical conditions but I'm not sure of my chances).

If I were you and have some cash on hand, I'd stock up little by little. My biggest mistake was not keeping up with what was going on or else I would have prepared better. Like when that hurricane hit us, we were prepared (we were on higher ground but a lot of other people did suffer and lost their houses / lives).

Oh I wouldn't even risk going to the clinic, but if you need to get shots then just take every precaution :/

————————————————————————————

[@Jenni19] I know what you mean, it felt like something out of a movie that this whole situation was even happening.

————————————————————————————

[@DarkJoshua] Oh, I really imagined all of that. I wonder how it's like living there before the pandemic, I imagine it must be like my grandmother's village, her's is surrounded by mountains. Did they allow you to stay at the hotel so you wouldn't have to travel back and forth as much?

Ah, I'm still sore about my trip being cancelled. I don't know if my conversion is right but my flight was something like £556, now I'm fighting with the airline to give me a refund because they're trying to shove a "voucher" that's good for 1 year worth only the amount I originally paid. I have to renew my passport in December (which was why I booked a flight in April) and I planned that trip a year ago :/

I'm glad your family is okay, watching what was happening in Italy, Spain and France really put me down for a few days. We have no family in Italy but my mother was crying about the whole thing, I think it was the shock of the numbers that initially got to her.

We haven't reached the point yet where they will ask us if we are 'essential' workers but I have seen the police stopping people after a certain hour. I have my state license on me as my job was deemed essential, just in case.

Keep in touch with your sister for sure, some people really do reach badly to isolation like this.

————————————————————————————

[@Alma Barroca] I know you were still studying, so I guess out countries kinda cancelled classes around the same time (ours was the 15th). I doubt school will start back up again in the following months, I heard from others saying they'd have to start back up again in September for the 2021 school year.

I think a lot of people; once forced to isolate themselves from people, noticed they had some real deep problems. I'd get some professional help after this, in the meantime keep a journal during this period, it might help you explain what's been going on or what triggers you to a professional that you choose to reveal your issues with.

Our presidents are alike then, I thought we had it bad but it seems in moments like these, you truly see if your "leaders" are competent enough to handle the weight of millions of lives in their hands. I'm sad to report that Mexico's president falls in the same category, he's a very smart man but very foolishly lets his religion obscure his reasoning.

————————————————————————————
You're all welcome to discuss politics, just don't let it escalate too much.

In here, we're under lock down for the 3rd week -today is our 4th. France declared quarantine, so you can't go out if it's not to make essential groceries (Eating, drinking, some police officers even checked some bags at the exit of stores… Which is not allowed), to work if working from home isn't possible or to walk your dog. 80% of our economy and businesses are shut down. Classes are cancelled, and final exam (Baccalauréat, BTS, CAP, BPE…) are cancelled, pupils will be assessed on their work during the previous year. I work for our Administration in the "creative field" (I'm a graphist/printer, I oversee designs and their print/making) so I can work from home, but we don't have any work since administration like city halls etc are "working" with the vital people.

The hardest part is not being able to go out see my horse. I'm an equestrian, and we can't go out to provide for its vital needs. He's in a private stable, so the owner is obliged to take care of him, so he decided to let all the horses in the lands for the day and to get them go in at night. I guess all my efforts to improve its breath, cardio and health are more or less wasted. I know he's happy in the field, but hey, I'm at the barn everyday so it's a bit hard.

I guess the happiest one in here is my cat. He's sitting on my laps, on my keyboard, ... I'm not completely alone :)
Oh and tomorrow is the launch of Disney+ in France, so I'm a bit excited as -if no one noticed yet, I'm a bit of a fan.

As a "at risk person" (Several bad health issues in the past), my nice neighbors helped me shopping so I don't have to go out. I'm grateful for this, but I'm also a bit bored in my little flat. I can't compare with medical people and people taking risks, and can't complain though. I'm trying to read books I've let down, or to get new skills like cooking recipes I never tried. I'm looking at planes on FlightRadar, it's my second hobby. Oh, and improve languages, of course :p

Hope everyone's fine and safe. Wish you the best.

In this last week I've barely seen France on the news, is it worse now than 3 weeks ago?

Are you at least getting updates on your horse?

Just from glancing the news today:
• Italy, Spain, and France reported declines in daily coronavirus death tolls. Their governments don't plan to lift national lockdowns and social distancing rules anytime soon.
• France’s daily toll of coronavirus hospital deaths falls for second straight day
• 3 countries have started to slow the coronavirus with total lockdowns. Here's how long they took to work.

This is what the US needs to do, but people are f*cking stubborn. I know you guys have stricter rules implemented, but they are doing good overall. People here despite all these restrictions are hanging out in groups in parks, grocery stores and parking lots. The police love to pull people over for the most mundane things but can't start breaking up groups? Or like the moron governor in Georgia that's opening beaches up despite the pandemic still going on? Or that Florida refused to close up its beaches because it wanted spoiled college students to have "fun" on their Spring breaks? 70% of Florida is elderly retired people, I'm surprised their numbers aren't higher down there. Or the morons that traveled to Mexico and came back testing positive, the people that went to Mardi Gras and came back infected? Oh Lord, help this numbskulls grow enough brain cells to rubs together to have some common sense.

in Spain the lock down started on March 13
the day before I sent my son to buy something to snack on
while i was continung the renovation of my house..currently making tadelack..that I can't finish ...
He came back empty-handed because it was total madness in the supermarket.
We laughed at the situation mimicking zombies..
Everything then went down hill very quickly
March 16 closing of borders and prohibition of going out except for buying products of first necessity.
At first the super markets were robbed, and no more toilet paper and I have read that beer consumption has increased by 80%.
Theres a beer brand with the name of corona, I don't know if it is the most consumed?
now it's quieter but dumbfounding when you see the cashiers with masks, security guards, and lines indicating the distances to be respected, I admit that this sight annoys me every time. Now we are being advised to put on masks, so I'm going to sew some.
I started by doing a big cleaning in the house where we live, disinfecting everything.
Then I invaded the kitchen to make pastries and bread, I prefer what is salty but right now i'am eating more sweets.
I eat the news around the world, and watch the documentaries about the history of epidemics.
(by the way that movie is incredibly similar https://youtu.be/PqWj3uKLeCo), reading, planting ...

I have the impression of having an overcoat which is pressing on me but that does not prevent me from sleeping.
My childrens have always followed their studies at home..so it does not change them too much.
my son play guitar, paint..

Here we would have started the Holy Week, they can't make prossesssions but they are still playing Saetas, at 8pm we applaud the healthcare staff.

Spain has reached the peak and the number of daily cases has been downtrending, but the return to normal will come slowly .

Yes I'm getting updates every other day. So far, he's destroyed 2 fences because his favorite mare isn't in the same field as his  :*) And he managed to take off his stable rug and trample on it... Little devil.

Deaths and daily hospitalization are slowly getting restrained. Since yesterday and the day before (You know French has a word for that day, it always makes me wonder), less people were admitted in hospitals, and less people died from Covid19. Lockdown is showing us the hope signs.

I've travelled to Florida in late February (17-29) for my work, and I was "amazed" by how people reacted. We knew Italy was in a very delicate position, so my colleague and I avoided big gatherings (ok, except that day in Walt Disney World...), and most people didn't get why we did that. I've seen on news how students are behaving during Springbreak, the "you only live once" mentality. Yeah, that's the point, you only live once -And I'm saying this as a person who was close to death from a time. Honestly, I'm a bit shocked by their behaviours; but I was always told America was another thing. I get it, now. :/

[@Sarasvati] A few days before the 13th people were already panic shopping, we didn't think it was bad at the time seeing as the first case in our country was a while back. The US was aware of the virus since January 2020, no one did anything to look into it, we watched as hell began to break loose in China, we should have started to take precautions then.

Yes, Corona is a beer. Mexico has stopped it's production of Corona last week, before that they had a sale on Corona beer for try and discourage people's hatred for it.

Baking's not a bad idea, the oven works again and we have quite a lot of ingredients for baking, might start making sweets for the family.

I hope Spain goes back to normal soon, but it gives some home that the number of hospital admissions and death numbers are dwindling.

[@Floppylou] Aww, what a mischievous horse :)

I think several European countries have hit their "worst" stage, I only hope those numbers keep going down, people are getting antsy being stuck at home.

I've never been to Florida, I refuse to travel anywhere South. I've never even been to Disney World. Florida is like the black sheep of the US family. People down there are too chill about anything, Florida is often made fun of because "only in Florida" weird sh*t happens down there.

I hate it when people say I'm being racist (and I'm not because I'm looking at numbers and I'm looking at the news) but if you look at all these videos of these people acting like morons, it's all white people who are hoarding toilet paper and disregarding the rules during the pandemic. I live in an area where almost 80% of people here are white (and mostly Republican), we (Mexicans) make up less than 19%, our population is half a million people (we are the least populated area). We only have 2 hospitals, about 60% of people that got tested, tested positive for COVID-19. To be more specific, out of say 1,000 residents in my specific area, 200 people have COVID-19.

We have a small community, none of our people are panicking. For God's sake they still sell toilet paper and other items that are long gone in the areas where more white people live. People have gotten arrested for fighting for items in the store, no wonder outsiders make fun of us for acting like clowns. This is why we won't hit that curve until the end of the year, if only a few abide by the rules then it won't work. Other countries being stricter are seeing some results.

Funnily enough, the quarantine barely changed my habits except that now I wake up one hour and half later in the week. As an administrative assistant in a university, I have to work remotely. The situation is very hard for us to handle, but we do our best for our students.

In the other hand I have been somehow spending less and less time playing video games so that I can focus more on learning foreign languages (I hope I will be able soon to speak with my fiancé, who is Colombian, in his mother tongue *crossed fingers*). I recently resumed my translation work on LT, which is a good thing as well.

Tomorrow is the third week of containment in France. We do hope we are half way! I won't exhibit my opinion on our government's late response to the sanitary crisis. My inner peace could be in jeopardy if I did.

I'm not sure this got publicized elsewhere, but one of the President's sons used Twitter to accuse China of deliberately creating and releasing COVID in the world, to reach global domination. It was so chaotic that even an ambassador demanded an apology, as China is our greatest commercial ally. Their family is not known for thinking straight, they certainly think coronavirus is a communist creation. I have people in my family who publicly posted on Facebook that China and Russia were allies and that the pandemic was just an act of their partnership. It amazes me how people can be dumb enough.

Here in Brazil, state schools of Rio are using online education, but the problem is that there are hundreds of thousands of students with a poor income, so they wouldn't have access to it. I think they should extend the 2020 school year up to March 2021 and start another one from there. Keeping online classes now wouldn't be fine for the reasons I mentioned. I live in a big city and close to Downtown, however, up my street we have a favela, so you can clearly see the abysmal social difference. One of my professors will start using videoconferences as classes, but the others haven't said a word about that.

A good thing happening is that people are showing friendly faces. There is a couple in my apartment building that left their cellphone numbers in the elevator so people in need (the elderly or those in the risk group) can ask them to go out and but whatever, from groceries to medicines.

To keep my mental health stable, my friends and I usually either have video-conferences on Google Hangouts or have Gartic matches with our boyfriends/girlfriends joining us. It helps us forget the sad situation we're living.

Same here, but I wish my boyfriend spoke Arabic so he could teach me  :P (his maternal family comes from Syria).

I just bought a book on conversational Greek and started re-reading another one on the history of Romanian I bought for my specialization degree. I'm also taking this time to re-read some other language books I had around as I'm thinking of something for the near future, 😁😁😁

It is a 4th week of stay-at-home for me and my family. I was lucky enough to be able to do substantial shopping on March, 14th, complete with toilet paper (1 package, I am not a crazy selfish prepper) and even some sanitizing wipes. So food-wise, we are OK and trying not to go anywhere besides taking our dogs for walks.
My elderly mother-in-law came to live with us, so my husband feels less worried about her wellbeing while she is here. But that prompted us to be really careful and not to let the guard down regarding all recommendations on stopping the spread of the virus. Not that we would have been stupid and careless in the first place.

But so many people are. They just cannot get it in their heads!

I was so shocked and angry earlier today! I had to go to the big chain produce store that also has I pharmacy that my prescription medication is filled at. So they called me that my refill is ready. I could have opted for my medication to be mail to me, but I though it would be probably safer if I would pick it up myself. So I donned gloves and mask, planned all my movements, and stepped in to the store. First of all, I though because it is well known and big chain, they would have at least basic corporate measures like personnel wearing gloves and maybe masks. Nope! OK. I reached the pharmacy which is in the back of the store. Not much people so it was easy to observe social distance. I noticed that pharmacists were separated by the newly built glass barrier at the register and though: “Good!” And then I saw a beautiful sight - four boxes of nitrile gloves right by the counter! I took one box and also one bottle of Tylenol. A pharmacist rang my medication and I asked if I could pay for the gloves and Tylenol there as well. She said she couldn’t ring anything that comes outside the glass barrier. I thought again: “Good!” So I went to self-checkout. Having thought and planned all my steps beforehand, I carefully scanned Tylenol and dropped it in to the plastic shopping bag, and then I scanned that box of gloves, dropping it carefully in the bag as well. The register blinked and said that Sales Assistant’s help is needed. A young woman, no gloves, no mask, comes right up to me (no social distance) and tries to help me with the self-checkout machine. Well, she can’t figure what went wrong and she says: “So let me check the items you scanned”, and before I know it, reaches her hands into my bag. Here I am, with elderly person at home, all this planning about safety while shopping, etc. and her ungloved hands in my bag. I said: “Never mind”, and left the store, leaving what would have been a very useful stuff right there, in the store.
I don’t think I overreacted. I lost any confidence in, at least, this store. How can we stop the spread of this horrible virus, if people don’t follow the rules? Who knows if she touched someone who is sick, or if she is sick herself but without symptoms? She did not give me a chance to be safe.
Sorry for my rant.
Otherwise, I am fine :-)))) Translating a lot, reading posts, watching some news and some shows, walking our dogs, texting and calling my friends, and above all, trying to stay positive :-))))

Some undergraduate schools here already went online1, but post-graduate ones haven't yet. They, it seems, have not been authorized yet to start classes online - I just received a WhatsApp audio from a professor saying that although we will start have weekly online meetings, it doesn't mean our classes will start.

Here in Brazil we have a pretty decent public health system (though I agree it has its problems - but it's more administrative), but do you want to know something? Ours is a huge country of continental dimensions. Sometime ago we got Cuban doctors to practice in remote areas of the country. Know what happened? Some people (the President) started spreading panic saying they were actually guerrilla fighters paid by the communist Cuban regime with another political party of Brazil, and people started thinking that they were actually stealing our jobs (xenophobia at its finest). After some politics were changed, they all went back to Cuba and our President said he would promote public calls to get Brazilians into those places. The result: very few natives did that and some areas still have no doctors.

I have a severe case of allergy and am required to take shots, thankfully my father does that for me as I don't know how to.

For some weird reason same thing happened here. I don't know why people are hoarding toilet paper. Markets are even limiting the amount of alcohol2 you can buy to 2 bottles of 500mL or 1 bottle of 1L. Problem? Prices are skyrocketing and some are selling those bottles at a very high price (20 bucks if you're lucky enough). Capitalism at its finest. In my home, though we can afford it, we're not throwing money out of the window yet, so we're cleaning up with a mix of bleach, water and Lysoform which we spray all around - we only use alcohol to clean our hands after we come from the street. And no, you're not being racist - same here. You know that Karen meme? This is actually what you see (it was even broadcasted in the news): a middle-aged white woman hoarded a shopping cart with alcohol, people started arguing with her. Stupid.

  • 1. Side note: our Ministry of Education already allows face to face courses to have at least 40% of their classes online. Back where I worked, they kind of 'virtualized' all courses and classes are had in kinds of videoconferences
  • 2. I know this actually refers to alcoholic beverages, but I don't know the word used to refer to something like this - a bottle of clear alcohol

Curiosity: This is like 200m from my home. It's a place where people gather each 4 years to watch soccer games where Brazil plays. It's at least different to see it empty now.

My city shared some photos of our center completely emptied. Those places are full of people in April, music students sing in the steps of our opera. Those are very powerful photo, to me. Maybe the strongest is this one:

About shortage, in here we lack some kind of flour. At the begining, people stored toilet paper, pastas and rice, but it seems they understood it was not worth it and things are slowly getting back to normal in our stores. Paris city declared "curfew" for running people: If you want to have your daily walk or run, it's now forbidden between 10 am and 7 pm (and you have to get a little paper saying you're authorized to get out 500m around your house and less than half an hour).

Our President, Emmanuel Macron, is supposed to speak on Thursday. I guess he'll announce a 2 weeks extension.

I don't know about you guys but in my home city, most stores are running low on hand sanitizer and apparently people have become so desperate for it that some people are stocking up on tons of vodka so they can (somehow) make thier own hand sanitizer from that 😑... wtf

It's going to get worse on that front. We ran out a month ago, that includes a lot of cleaning products. For a while you could buy hand sanitizer and other goods at really high prices (people were price gouging) and sites like Ebay and Amazon had to intervene and shut that all down. Now any remaining goods are prioritized for health workers and you can't purchase them anymore. I'd suggest buying sanitizer on Etsy if you really need it.

Even hydrogen peroxide? It works fine, FYI. And if you add a few drops of mere vinegar to it that will work even better. And a few drops of ethanol in compound can make a kinda virus-buster out of it. Organic peracids and peresters are the things nCov fears the most. You may question [@St. Sol] if you want to, he's a chemist, AFAIK.
BTW, vodka s a thing. Never mind if you don't meet with the virus, you can still use it at your pleasure. :)

Was doing a big spring cleaning this morning! I should say, afterwards it felt really great! Some physical activity and tidying up does wonders! And even earlier in the morning took our dogs for a long walk around the neighborhood. The weather was perfect! Lots of hyacinths and daffodils blooming right now. Pretty soon we’ll see some tulips. All in all, it helps you forget the scary stuff for a while. Will be baking tonight. Maybe, will open a bottle of red wine :-)

Here in Brazil they allowed alcohol with a different composition (sorry, I don't know technical Chemistry words to be more precise) to be sold. In the past it was forbidden because there had been serious accidents with children as it was/is more inflammable than normal alcohol. Markets are selling it for a very high price, though.
