Aynalar (English translation)

  • Translations: English

Gençliğimi kaybettim birtakım odalarda;
Kaybolan gençliğimi aradığım aynalarda
Ölüler dolaşıyor böğürlerinde elleri,
Aynı şeyi arayan akraba hayalleri.
Yalnız bir taze kadın yaşlılığı arıyor;
Yaşlılığım, yaşlılığım! Diye yalvarıyor.
Sırları dökülüyor baktığı aynaların;
Söndürüp yürüyor bir bir aynaları kadın.

I lost my youth in several rooms;
I was looking for my lost youth in the mirrors
The deads are walking, their hands in their chests,
Relative dreams that looking for the same thing.
Just a lonely young woman is looking for the old age;
She is begging: My old age, my old age!
The secrets of the mirrors that she looks at are falling;
Woman is walking by extinguishing the mirrors one by one.

Hi, not quite sure of the following:
— The deads walking their hands in their chests, — dead ARE walking? I think it means here “hands down” as in “given up”
— Relative dreams that looking for the same thing. — I think it means Kindred souls that are looking for the same thing
— although oldness is a word, typically used is “old age”
— The secrets of the mirrors that she looks at are falling; Woman IS walking by extinguishing the mirrors one by one.
It came out that woman is walking because she is extinguishing mirrors - so sentence is faulty. But, mostly I think that it is her secrets that are exposed as she looks at herself in the mirrors so she puts them out one by one.

Hi, thank you for reading my translation carefully. Sorry I am not an expert in English so I may have mistakes. I will correct them, thank you.
-''The deads are walking, their hands in their chests,'' -I don't think it means "given up" here. "their hands in their chest'' is a phrase in Turkish and means "to fail or be unable to work".
-You're right, I could use "Kindred souls" instead of "Relative dreams". But there is no word in the sentence meaning "soul", "dream" is more appropriate.

This is a poetry translation, I wanted to translate it as I understand it. Your thoughts may be correct, but poetry can give different meanings to each reader.

You are so right. I don’t speak Turkish so my comments are only the reflection of the meaning filtered through the personal lens. And my English is less than expert.

It was good to have you explain your thoughts - much appreciated.
