December

The smell of the sea and the winds of fall
and the juice of oranges
and a kind of sweet sour heavy rain
pulls me from my house to outside
to go on a walk and to breath
air of sunsets blue red
to go on a walk and to breath
air of sunsets blue red

Air of sunset, a faint scent
the rain has just stopped
rise, float and observe
how beautiful is the world
rise, float and observe
how beautiful is the world

The lights are pale
the eyes of the clouds are blue
and something strange like this
presses silently on the chest
presses, rips and demands
the heart wants to sneeze
presses, rips and demands
the heart wants to sneeze

Air of sunset, a faint scent...

December is a scented month
smells of apple and rain
you give hidden powers
to the dead of Tammuz1
you know to return
a little spring to Tel Aviv
you know to return
a little spring to Tel Aviv

Air of sunset, a faint scent...

  • 1. Debate exists on who or what Altermann, the poet who wrote these lyrics, was referring to. Perhaps to renewal and repair that takes place in winter and spring, perhaps and i quote "The myth of Tammuz's wars is therefore, to Alterman, an essential and daily subject, present in many dimensions of our lives" see this site(Hebrew) for more info: https://blog.nli.org.il/sipur-december/

hi moshe,
it's good hearing from you again.
on a first reading i found, i think, a few wrong interpretations. i'll come to them latter.

it's good, just a few observations/ suggestions:
1. pulls me from my house to the [outside] --> makes me want to be outdoors?
2. December is [a month of complaint] --> it doesn\t sound right to me because קוטר means also diameter, a line that divides. could be
between fall and winter? apples and rain?

your commentary is well placed. i didn't understand first, so i searched and learned something today. good for you.

1) thank you. I removed the word "the". A matter of taste.
2) very likely u are correct. מקוטר = diametered? a month cut in half. could be for sure. Altermann Z"L is not here for us to ask.
