I was shocked when I asked people who went to school in Quebec. They did not know Vigny. How is it even possible when someone studies his own language and literature in middle school!?

I still know the few last verses by heart. Back in the 80's he was among the Romantic poets you would systematically study in French class. I don't know how it goes nowadays, but I'd be surprised not to see him at least mentioned.

Poor beasts are practically the embodiment of the fear of being eaten alive. They have been massacred to extinction and only artificially re-introduced a few decades ago. Now there must be around 500 scattered over a third of the country and still sheep farmers are yelling blue murder at them. Like the sharks in our overseas territories, massacred so a few people can be spared the trouble of waiting for muddy water to clear before enjoying surfing. More job for the karma police...

I might be wrong, but матёрый IMHO means mature, full-grown, experienced, leader of the pack, dominant, like an alpha male wolf.

Great example of what our Google God defines as pertinence. I've learned a great deal about World of Warcraft but am still unsure whether "seasoned wolf" would sound impressive or amusing to a native ear. To me it sounds ok, but who am I to challenge the judgement of our benevolent God?
