It is like a dream full of scary, no good, unpleasant.

Despite all her fancy clothes and talking down to her friend, she still uses the word "ain't." So, we see that at heart 'Melia is still herself kind of a "raw country girl", at least a little bit.

За Надю говорить не могу, но иронию Брата еще как понимаю!
И вообще для меня здесь не то что двоякое, а десятирякое (говоря жаргоном Пинхусовой Дуняши) впечатление от русского перевода. С одной стороны, я восхищаюсь искусством подбора русских словечек, прекрасно отражающих сцены и диалоги, описанные автором, - серьезная, тяжелая и очень качественная работа!
Но с другой, такая степень русификации, такой запредельный couleur locale, что, думаю, любой читатель будет в некотором шоке... Несоответствие авторского и переведенного (именно в лексических деталях) просто разительное!
Очень хочу, Пинхус, чтобы мое удивление не было понято как критика. Это просто чисто индивидуальное восприятие, мозг отказывается почувствовать хоть каплю атмосферы, описанной англоязычным автором применительно к тамошней, "туземной",:-))) действительности, и потому отторгает.

Я говорил не о разной среде в авторском и переводном стихах, а о слишком разных СЛОВЕСНЫХ СРЕДСТВАХ.
Хорошо, если так не слишком понятно (вполне допускаю, что был косноязычен, да и любому будет, думаю, трудно четко описать в подобной ситуации оттенки собственного восприятия), привожу пародийно-утрированный пример, такие всегда оказываются более доходчивыми:
Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L'étendard sanglant est levé
("Марсельеза", ставшая гимном Франции, -
Вперед, сыновья нашей Родины,
Настал час славы!
Против нас тирания,
Водрузившая свой кровавый флаг)
переделаем так:
"Айда, ребятки, за Расею,
Глядишь - схлопочем славу мы!
Всех этих сук по полной взгреем -
Пущай узнают мрак тюрьмы."
