Fare Thee Well

Versions: #1#2#3#4
Farewell, and if it is for good then farewell for good 1
If o’er the edge – then go, adieu, but do remember me 2
So near’s the edge with mist of dusk
And laughing January’s drunk 3
I am encircled idol like within its fire ring 4

Forget what you have never known, forget these words of mine
Said not by me, or never said, so take them out of mind
Beyond the edge, there lurks the dark
And winter’s not by all means far
And my own shadow with yours hugged for road’s setting out

Beyond eternity and carefree and finite blizzard days
When sleep was far apart from us, when we had no wink of eyes
We’ll never wake up, never come back to each other or the rest
Right from the polished side behind the looking-glass 5

And when in embers of the morn you turn estranged from me
When I become estranged as well from you, my soul mate
Hold on to air in the freeze
The air as sharp as killing steel
It rose between us like a wall; we have to struggle for breath

Beyond eternity and carefree and finite blizzard days
When sleep was far apart from us, when we had no wink of eyes
We’ll never wake up, never come back to each other or the rest
Right from the polished side behind the looking-glass
Beyond transparent and then dreary and time-wasted winter days
When skies of blue get mutely torn, when sleepless nights are white all right 6
We’ll never come back to each other or ex-selves
Right from the polished side behind the looking-glass (X2)

Author's comments:

In one of her interviews Hellawes, the lead singer and songwriter, herself revealed how this song was written. It was in December and they needed one last song for their new album "Alchimia" She was in a disturbed state of mind and remembered various lines pouring down on her out of memory from every language literary quarter. She said it was an artistic compilation of those lines. I've made footnotes to the ones I've tracked down, some still ring the bell but I'll enter more reference with time, I hope.
