Прогулка по городу (Progulka po gorodu) (English translation)

A stroll about the town

Versions: #1#2
Please don’t bother searching for me,
I've gone to stroll about the town -
Be it half-shadow, be it half-light
I'm moving along barely awake houses.
I will save from the loneliness
these streets and tiny courtyards
forgotten by these buildings
for the sake of comfort and dreams.
I’ve gone to stroll about the town,
to listen to the wind, and lack of thereof.
Let the rain fall quietly down,
washing away my every trace.
Please don’t go searching for me,
because I’m no longer here -
I’ve gone into the twilight town -
The kingdom of dark and daze.
And from here I’m not likely to escape -
it’s something incomprehensible -
I was enticed into the trap
by this town, the rat catcher.
With the madman’s heated prattle,
vague words were whispered,
He guided me and left me
in the clutches of fantasy and dreams.
If anyone says that I perished,
If you happen to hear, out of the blue,
That I fell asleep, not to awake -
Don’t be saddened, and have faith.
I didn’t fall asleep, my darling,
I’ve gone to stroll about the town.
I just went out and without a sound
Behind myself closed the door.

Lovely translation, Dea!

I have a feeling she means Be I half-shadow, be I half-light. What d'you think?

BlackSea4everBlackSea4ever    Sun, 16/05/2021 - 16:21

Yes. I thought it works with the line below “where I’m moving” — the mood is that she has turned into the ghostly light.
Thanks, Nadia! I like it very much to get your feedback.
I wish Alex didn’t block me - I wanted to help with his, but since it was not an option...

I also wondered about that.

D, I see your point but stick to my opinion. I have a very strong feeling it should be I, not it. But that's your translation which must reflect your perception of the lyrics. So please, don't be discouraged. It's just an opinion, nada mas.

Actually, I think that it would be more logical that the city is half in the dark already, but one should first check the syntax : in particular, would it be correct in Russian to say « полусветом » if it were about a girl ? I leave it to Russian speakers. I decided to use the expression « entre chien et loup » in French, which means « at dusk », but I might be wrong.

Ref dusk - I also felt the need for the word and used it later - twilight town, but as the girl herself feeling she is half-shadow, half-light — I explained above how it feels to me: she is dissipating from this realm.

Dea, I've read his translation. There are so many mistakes that I'll come up with my suggestions only after I have fully retired. Besides, he doesn't care anyway, so why bother?
