(O, eti lyudi, eta rechʹ) (English translation)

кровь заливает белок;

Oh, these people, this language

Oh, these people! This language,
almost forgotten, it raves.
With lack of practice, it dies of old age,
That is to say, it roams, the ghost of graves.
I don’t recall a word of it, but some days
through the ripped shroud of the past,
I sometimes stare through its aperture
at the fleeting word that just passed.
If capillaries should break,
Eyes will be bloodshot;
Looking into the mirror as
At fair Eloi by the savage Morlock. 1
But happy is the headless horseman: 2
for from under all of those six legs,
like a butterfly from the grass-span,
a long-forgotten syllable ebbs.
