Når Snøen Smelter (English translation)

When The Snow Melts

Versions: #1#2
[Verse 1]
I thought a home
Was a small place
With four walls
And a family
I have tried to search
To find the way by myself
But when you leave alone
It's difficult to find

[Pre-Chorus 1]
It's easy to lose
But when you find
The feeling of coming home

[Chorus]
Like when the snow melts
Over an icy fjord
Like when the sun warms
The frozen soil
Because when someone sees you
In a storm and gives you laugh
Then you know that there is a home
Which is not a place 1

[Verse 2]
On a mountain
There is a tree I sit by
Where all thoughts
Just fly away
And right here
I remember you said
That you will never forget
Where you come from

[Break]
Hm-hm-hm…
Hm-hm, hm-hm…

[Pre-Chorus 2]
It's easy to lose
But you gave me
The feeling of coming home

[Chorus]
Like when the snow melts
Over an icy fjord
Like when the sun warms
The frozen soil
Because when someone sees you
In a storm and gives you laugh
Then you know that there is a home
Which is not a place

[Bridge]
Who will show the way
Always be there
Who accepts you, the way you are
Who will show the way
Who can give you laugh

[Outro]
Then you know that there is a home
Which is not a place

  • 1. This sentence is referring to a feeling of home, not a concrete place.

Small correction:
The sentence "Da vet du at det finns et hjem som ikke er et sted" means "Then you know that there is a home that's not a place".

Hello! Thanks for your feedback. What you're saying is a literal translation but I wanted to keep the meaning. I actually should have added the "commented" tag because of this sentence. I'm not really sure that the sentence refers to a feeling or a dream (?) of home, not a concrete place. I will also ask a native Norwegian speaker to be sure of this. Thanks again!

That's a fair point. I got the impression that it's about a home that you find for yourself, that differs from the 'traditional' idea of a home. Here's my interpretation:
"I thought a home
Was a small place
With four walls
And a family"
For me, this says that she used to think that a home was an actual place, but implies that she doesn't anymore.

She also introduces the idea of a home being someone else in the chorus:
"Because when someone sees you
In a storm and gives you laugh
(Then you know that there is a home that's not a place)"

And especially towards the end of the song:
"Who will show the way
Always be there
Who accepts you, the way you are
Who will show the way
Who can give you laugh
(Then you know that there is a home that's not a place)"

That being said, I'm not a native speaker either, so it's probably better to confirm it, but I do think there's a lot of hinting going on.

Hi again! I decided to change it after a native speaker's comment and I think it now looks better! Thank you.
