De To Spellemenn (English translation)

The Two Musicians

There was a lady who lived by Kjerraten *
"Father is a summer swan" **
Two beautiful daughters she had
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

For the youngest, suitors came every day
"Father is a summer swan"
The oldest could not stand this
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

The youngest stepped out on a bridge with her life in her hands
"Father is a summer swan"
The oldest followed with dark intentions
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

Sister, sister help me ashore
"Father is a summer swan"
Then I will give you my golden hair pin
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

No, I won't help you ashore
"Father is a summer swan"
Not until you give me your fiancé
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

No, before I give you my fiancé
"Father is a summer swan"
I'd rather go under the blue waves
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

And the weather and western-wind flared
"Father is a summer swan"
And washed the body up onto the sand
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

Two musicians stepped forwards
"Father is a summer swan"
They saw the body laying on the shore
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

Come, let us go upwards to the great farm
"Father is a summer swan"
There where the wedding will be
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

They played at first
"Father is a summer swan"
Our bride has drowned her sister
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

The bride took a golden band off her arm
"Father is a summer swan"
She gave it to the musicians
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

We are standing here a couple of drunkards
"Father is a summer swan"
No-one wants to believe our words
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

When they played the third
"Father is a summer swan"
The bride started crying
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

That evening she was standing on the wedding floor
"Father is a summer swan"
Next morning she was laying burnt on a bed of coals
"They're awaiting, waiting, welcome home again"

* A "kjerrat" is an endless chain which pulls items along a horizontal or a diagonal line. It was used for transporting timber. It can also refer to "Kjerraten i Åsa (The Kjerrat in Åsa)" and the surrounding area which is the most known in Norway (https://snl.no/kjerrat).

** Your guess is as good as mine. I'm guessing this is an old symbol which I can no longer find any connection to. You could do a wide symbolism and say summer = youth & period of the year (hence: temporary), swan = love & faithfulness. For context: I have concluded that "fattera" is a shortening of "fatter erra (far er en)" = dad is a. So in all its lovely analysis: Dad is a young lover who went away. It seems like the lines enclosed by "" tell the story of the father who regretted his choice to marry young and went away leaving the three alone. Yet, the family still remembers him as someone trustworthy and wants him home.
