Der alte Preuße

Jedes Jahr am selben Tage,
Fern der Inster und Rominte,
Hört ein Mann beim kalten Winde
Ein Trakehner wiehernd klagen,
So wie einst als Kind im Winter...
Dann eilt er zu seinen Pferden
In den Stall und sein Gesang
Mit dem trauten Preußenklang
Ist das längste Lied auf Erden
Das er singt so gut er kann
Und er küsst sie an die Nüstern,
Aus der Kehle - ein Geflüster.
Schnuppernd sehen sie dann an
Wie er trinkt sein Bärenfang.
Und er weint, der alte Mann.

The old Prussian

Every year, on the same day,
Far from river Inster1 and the Rominte2,
He hears: in the cold winds
The Trakehner3 whinnies, complains,
Just as it happened, one winter, with that boy ...
So he is quick to his horses
At the stable; and his singing,
With that familiar Prussian4 tone,
Is the longest song on earth
That he sings as best he can.
And he kisses her on the nostrils,
Whispering out of his throat -
She sniffs and observes him
As he drinks his "Bärenfang"5;
And the old man carries on weeping.
