Original lyrics
Der Kampf um den Südpol
Was bleibt nach dem Tode,
Wenn der Name nicht bleibt.
Und wie bleibt der Name
Wenn Geschichte er schreibt.
Wie schreibt er Geschichte
Wenn er entdeckt, wenn er entdeckt,
Was sich unsern Blicken
Translation
The struggle for the South Pole
What remains after death
If the name no longer remains.
And how does the name remain
when it writes history
How does it write history
When it discovers, when it discovers
What is up until now
hidden from our view.
What remains after death
If the fame no longer remains
No longer remains
What remains after death
A great deed, great immortality
It happened in the twentieth century
All countries, all had been discovered.
Only the cold pole in the South
Still white on the map
Then the great race began
Their ships went fast,
Two captains, nameless
Later: Amundsen and Scott
The Antarctic was soon reached
But then came the most difficult bit
The journey into the ice began on sledges
And no way back from their goal
And hunger and cold, loneliness,
Longer than a year
And the constant question:
How far was the other one, was the other one?
Only the first, only the first
would have really reached his goal.
In the eyes of humanity,
only being the second, the second
in not much
And they drove their dogs
and themselves on without mercy.
For the one would fail
And the other would soon be great.
Yet as Scott arrived at the South Pole
There Amundsen’s flag was flying
And then the iciness penetrated
deep into his heart from outside
No petroleum helped any more
And no thought of wife and child
And frozen next to him are four men
In the eternal ice and wind.
What remains after death
If the name no longer remains.
And how does the name remain
when it writes history
What remains after death
If the fame no longer remains
No longer remains
What remains after death
A great deed, great immortality
What remains after death
If the fame no longer remains
No longer remains
What remains after death
A great deed, great immortality
