Lavrentis Mahairitsas - Didymoteicho blues (Διδυμότειχο μπλουζ) (English translation)

English translation

Blues of Didymoticho

On 1976 just before the dawn
I boarded on a white boat
It was just like a fridge or a hospital
On 1976 the national beast
Sent me to Chios island
It was just like a bad joke, a cold surgery
Legendary walk-on with a rag profile
Sweaty as hell, what an awful summer
Sheared scruffs
Civil hate, cigarette loans and nerve-racking orders
Same prostitutes from Omonoia Cinema
Like a cheap perfume
On 1976 I closed my eyes
I smoked a boce and I lost my senses
It was like Dante’s hell
Like a decommissioned fake rebel
A had my lame dog as my alibi
As my mission
I was lisping “Yes sir” for two months
Only ten months left and I was sent to Chaidari
Young men in flames
I was hiding it like being a counterfeiter
I said “it’s not gonna be for a long time” I was a protector
Gift and nightmare
Didymoticho blues
Didymoticho blues
Didymoticho blues
Athens was next to me like a serene to Ulysses
The belly button of the world is just a preface
Behind and in front of me
It was for years like a tavern, like a smudge
Philhellenic state, the worship of nothing
Poetic permission
In any case, back to my problems
My khaki laundry, my reveilles
My mute watchtower post
My transfer, my crazy violin
My hoarse morning in front of the realy different Didymoticho
Didymoticho blues with an untuned guitar
Didymoticho blues my lost penny
Didymoticho blues my filthy brush
My wet cigarettes, rotten fruits in the frames
Didymoticho blues
Didymoticho blues it’s name is the reason
Didymoticho blues a hole in geography
Didymoticho blues empty photo
Absurd conscription, stressed masturbation
Didymoticho blues

Author's comments:

This song is about the military conscription during the military Junta era in Greece. Didymoticho is a city with a military camp next to the Greek+Turkish borders, where most of the young obliged sodiers would spent half of their conscription. Really anti-military and anti-conscription song.
