Do Chalum

Chalum, a rùin, o'n a dh'eug thu
's airsneulach, tinn as do dhéidh sinn.

Gearr bha do réis, gearr do shaoghal,
Buan an creuchd, bheum do dhaoine.

'S tusa bha meur éibhinn, aotrom,
dealasach,ceart, eirmseach, daonda.

Fulangach, treun, gleac ri eucail
gun fhiamh, gun ghealt ri uchd éig thu.

Sgoilear gun mheang, tuigseach gleusda
thionail ar fuinn, thruis gach sqeulachd.

Choisinn thu chliù thall an Èirinn
's bhos an Albainn mhór bha dh'fheum ort.

Blàth bha do chridhe, fialaidh muirneach,
macanta, còir, coibhneil, fiùghant.

Fuaraidh an nochd, aognaidh tùrsach
Gaoth anns a'bhearn nach gabh dùnadh.

Translation

To Calum

Calum, dearest, since you died
we are sorrowful, distressed because of you.

Your span was short, short your life,
long the hurt that struck your people.

You were pleasant, amusing, light-hearted,
enthusiastic, honourable, witty, humane.

Patient, brave, accepting infirmity
fearlessly, with no terror when on death's doorstep.

A faultless scholar, skilled and quick witted who
collected our tunes and gathered our stories together.

You won a good reputation over there in Ireland
and over here in Scotland you were highly valued.

Your heart was warm, generous, joyful,
gentle, just, kind and liberal.

It's chilly tonight, freezing and mournful
the wind in the breach that can't be closed.
