This is mainly for lovers of rap music.
How is rap regarded in France, given that in America it is a major part of the music industry and enjoyed by both the old and the young? (I get the impression that rap in France is just for the youth)
And who are the best French rappers now, excluding hardcore rappers? Personally, I love Lefa, Black M, Nekfeu and Bigflo and Oli, though there might be good/better rappers I don't know yet. If it helps, the criteria are flow, wordplay and rhyme, meaningful lyrics.

Personally, Maître Gims is my favourite French rapper.

Personally, I don't regard Maître Gims as a rapper. Even with Sexion he was doing much singing. And I think the lot of his rap songs are not good enough.

Perhaps it would be more fair to describe him as a rapper/singer. I agree--he does sing more than rap.

Rap is actually the kind of music the most listened and the most made in France. Almost only rappers were present in the thirty most listened to artists in France in 2018 on Spotify! And Désaccordé by Vald was the most listened to music in France on Spotify in 2018! I don't know exactly if it's listened to by all the generations in France, but what's for sure is that rap has a very important place in the industry! There is also a lot of featuring in rap between American and French artists. I am thinking in particular of Future or Gucci Mane with Kaaris, 6IX9INE with SCH or Lacrim, and more recently, YBN Cordae with Orelsan, etc.
.
Maitre Gims and Black M are two rappers pretty hated by rap fans because of their commercial nature, because they do more pop than rap today. In my opinion, I no longer like Black M but Maitre Gims still knows how to make very good rap music with an exceptional flow and good punchlines and still has a very beautiful voice, it must be said. Actually, I think the only survivor of Sexion d'Assaut is Lefa.
.
Personally, I've never been into BigFlo and Oli. Because their texts are actually very simple, and the topics they cover, everyone already knows it, and so in the end, it's very easy to get known. And I don't like their characters (they didn't like that Orelsan refuses a featuring when he's the one who gave them a bit of fame first)
.
Here are some French rappers I really like:
Orelsan - He's a rapper who can make a song full of funny punchlines but whose next music will be very serious with deep and sad words. If you like BigFlo and Oli, then you'll like Orelsan for sure! Here are some examples:Défaite de Famille - J'essaye, j'essaye - Discipline - Peur de l'Echec - Suicide Social - Rêves Bizarres
.
Vald - Vald is quite hard to describe because he can be so mysterious. Some describe him as a troll, others as a genius, others as a French Eminem. What's certain is that Vald really doesn't like it when you call him that. Personally, I think it's a mix between a troll and someone with imagination. On the other hand, I do not agree that it is a French Eminem because they are too different and do not have the same experience. But Vald managed to create his own universe, he made a name for himself mainly in music where he is not serious, where he trolls, which often gave him an image of someone who is not serious, always high. But since he released his album Xeu, much more serious than anything else he made, that has finally changed. In any case, Vald's writing style is really extraordinary, especially the rhyme scheme. Here are some example, (You may have to use a VPN because Vald's clips are blocked in America)
Serious song: Autiste - Barême - Vitrine - Promesse - Si J'arrêtais
Troll songs: Bonjour - Envie - Ostud - Strip - Lezarman
.
Vald has a best friend, Suikon Blaze AD, with whom he started rapping. At the time, Suikon Blaze was doing a lot of feat with Vald but never released solo albums and there are only 2 solo musics of him. Many fans would really like Suikon Blaze to do a solo project because he is really very strong. Other people also say that Suikon Blaze is the French Eminem, I'm already pretty much more in agreement with that than with Vald. Cause he sometimes uses the same tone of voice as Eminem and may have the same flow, especially the one from Relapse, which can be heard in Infanticide:Infanticide - Offshore - Dis Moi Tout BB - Qui Dit Mieux
Also, I almost translated all the music of Vald and Orelsan in LT Wink smile
.
Lorenzo - Lorenzo is a troll. That's all you need to remember. Because many people, even in France, take him seriously. While it's obvious his lyrics are bullshit. Lorenzo is a character, he's not real. He's a guy who loves weed above all else, who has a horrible voice, who says English words with a very strong French accent, crazy lyrics, etc. etc. He also makes funny videos, I don't know if you want to see them but you can easily find them. Here are some music:Freestyle du sale - Petit Prince - Carton Rouge - Bizarre - Champagne et Petou
.
Columbine - Columbine is a group, of which Lorenzo was a part. The funny thing is that at the time, Lorenzo was not rapping in the band, he was only in charge of the clips. Before, Columbine was mostly a troll band, but they are now serious. Yro (almost everytime as Charles Vicomte, a rich character he made), Foda C and Lujipeka re the leaders, even if Yro kinda doens't rap anymore. Here's their evolution:Vicomte - Dom Perignon - Les Prélis - Cache Cache - Adieu Bientôt
.
Django DKZ - Secondly, Django DKZ is a rapper who has made very little music, and I wonder where he is today. I hope he will come back, because he has a very good flow and his speciality is to make references to a lot of movies, shows, animes, video games etc. The music I'm going to show is practically all he's released (in video):Fichu - Impala 1967 - Oiseaux - Jason Bourne - Fable
.
Lord Esperanza - Lord can make calm and soft music,  serious music with very good lyrics, and music with very strong basses and lots of punchlines. So I will try to vary the choices:L'insolence des Elus - Et Alors - Noir - L'enfant Du Siècle - Killcam - Silver - 23 Carats
.
And then here are some more musics:Deux Minutes - Forchetta - Bête et méchant - Dans Le Sang - Rock With You - Dalida
.
Tell me what you liked Wink smile

To be honest, rap is one of the very few musical genres I positively hate, but I can still recognize talent in some singers Regular smile

If you're interested in meaningful lyrics you could look into French rap from the South.
One of the most famous early group of the 90's, I.A.M. was from Marseille.
Currently there is Kenny Arkana, also from Marseille, with pretty decent lyrics.
These guys rather tackle societal issues and politics, in a realistic way, instead of aping US gangstas.
That means less ego trips, misogyny, cult of money and rants about urban warfare or drug trafficking Regular smile

Vald, I only got to hear of him at LT. He seems okay but I don't really like his style. Orelsan's lyrics are dope but his flow, not quite.
Actually I think Bigflo and Oli's lyrics are simple to you is because you listen to a lot of rap. I'll give them a five star in terms of decency (less vulgarity) and lyrics that talk about life in general. And they seem to be too preoccupied with overly fast rap at times, haha.
I'll be checking out the songs of the other rappers you proposed. Thanks

To revive a bit this subject, I think you could add Columbine, or even Fauve to the french rapper's list.
There also is Romeo Elvis, or Lomepal (not the last album tho).
Dooz Kawa comes from my hometown and is insanely good by the way.
