We just booked flights from Australia to the United States and we leave in just over a week, so that's pretty last minute. We always use Expedia unless we're flying within Australia, then we go directly through Virgin or Qantas.

I travel within Europe and I often use skyscanner. Lets you compare the prices of all the companies offering a flight from a city to another. It's convenient, but not sure it's for a last-minute trip. Sometimes you can get a very cheap flight last-minute, but it's not really automatic. Good thing though, if you don't care about the destination and you just want to travel somewhere, it also lets you know the cheapest flights from your airport to any destination in the world. Might be worth checking it out.

I usually use Skyscanner or Kayak. I had great deals with Skyscanner (European travel). Check some private sales from airlines, most of them are pretty useful. For example, I've had a two-way trip with our national airline (AirFrance) in business class, 6h long, less than 100€ (which is not even the price of the usual classes).
