So, if you want to change your username, you can do it only once, by posting your request here in this thread or by sending a private message to LT.
Hi, I hadn't seen this thread till it was posted to modroom. I have been thinking about how nice it would be to change, since it's been years since I last felt identified with it. However, I am doubtful as for the convenience of it. Would the link to my profile change? Would my friends be notified? Would people's inboxes be updated changing my past name to my future name inside the messages? What would a username change imply?

Could a new link be created and both be made available? No one else would use it anyway. (say I changed it to doot, no one would use lyricstranslate.com/en/translator/doot since it wouldn't be available, and no one would use translator/ratanegra since I would have it, so why not make two links for easier access?) (and please don't change my name to doot, it's just an example)

I think 2 and 3 were already answered as yes. I guess 1 is yes. I'll wait for 1 and 4 and my own question. 
I'd like to change my username too, I sent you a PM with the username I want the change made to, and if you could; respond to questions #1 and #4 before that's done though
I think this change is wonderful. I don't want to change my username at this time, but I love that LT is offering that option to it's users, even given the stated limitations

You'll keep your friends, and the link to your profile will remain the same.
We can block old usernames on request. There's no sense to block them automatically, since there's no need to block usernames of novice users who created a wrong username by mistake.

We won't change a link to your profile, but it will show your new username.

That's great to know! I'm thinking about changing mine, but I'll think some more before taking this decision.
But may I suggest some guidelines for this? I mean:
* You can only do it once, so please don't do that if you're not sure of this change.
* Only users who have more than (x) points are eligible for an username change - that could be a way of making users be active in the website
And there's just a small thing I'd like to report. Though Ellen no longer is carnivorous_lamb, her old user name still appears where people quoted her.

Actually, this feature was designed for Novice users who registered a username by mistake.
Just a suggestion: for longtime users, you might want to post your old username on your profile or make a forum post announcing the change.

I designed it for the sole purpose of making a unique nickname that isn't used by any other Sebastián, since my name is so common... I succeeded at uniqueness, but not at readability. That tn is hard for Spanish speakers.

I would change it to 'Rodrigueano' (which is a way I use to call myself - it's a play on my middle name and would mean something like 'The Rodrigues way'). But just yesterday a professor of mine said this and I loved this. So, from now on, I'd like to be known as 'Alma Barroca'

Maybe you shouldn't do that now.
Your name has a bult-in date of expiration.
Once you finish your studies and earn your doctor's degree you are not "Future Doctor" anymore.
That's when you would have to change your name anyway.
Until then you should take it as an (additional) incentive to meet that goal.

Your archives are not destroyed in the process, whatever you had added to your former username will stay in your new one.
