Всем он был хорош, но пустой;
Боялись прикоснуть кислотой;
Обещано, что ноша легка;
Мы знаем, каково с серебром;

A nice and sad farewell to Lady USSR

Für alle war es gut, aber leer;
So viele Jahre
Nähte man mit Silber auf den Schnee,
Hatte Angst, sich mit Säure zu verätzen;
So viele Jahre
Sang man bis zum siebten Hahnenschrei,
Sang, aber fürchtete zu reden.
Doch wenn du Feinde wolltest,
Wer wagte schon, sich dir zu widersetzen?
Das stehen wir also nun,
Schlucken bis jetzt alle diesen Müll,
Den Teufel bei den Hörnern packen?
Uns wurde doch gesagt,
Dass der Morgen seinen Teil nicht fordert,
Man versprach, das die Last leichter wird;
Wissen wir, was das Silber ist;
Werden sehen, was die Säure ist

Grebenschikov is bidding Our Lady USSR farewell. The song came out in the early 90's.

hardships during the building of the socialist state
the frozen state of the USSR under Brezhnev
people afraid to speak their mind
militaristic state

and yet people live miserably
being fed bullshit about the bright future
so was it all worth it? Is the people to blame for all these empty lies?
we had beautiful dreams and now we behold the bitter reality.

A beautiful symbolic song.

Vielen Dank, Vera. Eine wunderbare Übersetzung, wie immer.

@Jadis: Hello my dear friend, ingirumimusnocte has given an excellent explanation. But nice to hear from you...
@ingirumimusnocte: Thank you for the explanation, your comment and the song. You already know that I love Grebenschikov (although he always marries his band member's wives. What a filou!). If you have any other nice songs for me, I am always interested.... Let' s keep in touch.

It will be my pleasure. I really like this Русский альбум very much. Some songs are terribly cryptic and would probably require heavy footnotes and hazardous interpretations, but I think a few could be worth a try:

Никита Рязанский

I love "Кони Беспредела" for its deliciously тоскливый mood, but I only grasp the general idea. I've been listening to it for more than 20 years now, but some lines remain a mystery to this day Regular smile

Decent singable translation of "Бурлак" is done by J. Fred. Bailyn:

Barge Hauler (The Volga Boatsman Song)

Down by the Volga walks the lonely Boatsman
Towing on his back that celestial plain
From the heavens above, the Lord shows his hand
But the Boatsman simply laughs – the hand contains cocaine.

And down the Volga – memories of the Golden Horde
And up the Volga – damsels transfixed on the shore
Such Kozelsky brew, such a watery flood
Oh pale blue snow, freeze my blood to the core.

How the winter simply calmed us with its iron and ice
Pacified us, then quietly turned into spring
When the snow starts to melt – oh what that shall entice
When the ice starts to break – oh how I shall sing.

Is this just the Volga or the Biblical Flood?
Or simply a lord and the traces he sweeps?
But I couldn't care less, I'm almost ready, my love
I am ready to sing to you out from the deep.

And from the dark of the deep, oh how the bells sing
From behind the old wall comes a chizh* to be believed
Oh forgive me my sins with the wave of your wing
Oh forgive me my sins – say something please.

So burn Seraphim golden winged-pomp
Bum and fear not your own guiding star
I couldn't care less, I've misplaced the bit to chomp
I have no other path – just wherever you are.

So here's our whole life: either Secam or Pal
Either full collapse or the Savior will dote
Going outside to find the start of it all
Got drunk and fell down - and that's all she wrote.

The ravens are silent, it's the women who scream
With a howl from the boon docks or some sisterly lore
Either the Saving Fast or some saving poison
Don't you hear my knock – please open the door.

So count us with the angels or among the boar
But please don't be mute, I can't make it without fire
Wherever I may roam I keep knocking at the door
But oh my Lord above, have mercy on me, Sire.

* Chizh: siskin.

These songs are full of odd metaphors and references, but still they make perfect sense, with a bit of work Regular smile

JadisJadis    Tue, 05/03/2019 - 18:20

Here are also metaphors, but they are crystal clear and quite poetical :
— Где лебеди? — А лебеди ушли.
— А во́роны? — А во́роны — остались.
— Куда ушли? — Куда и журавли.
— Зачем ушли? — Чтоб крылья не достались.

Some people compared the Бурлак song to a prayer, and it is.

JadisJadis    Tue, 05/03/2019 - 17:40

Btw. it seems each country has its own way of dealing with the Devil : Germans grab it by the horns, Frenchs drag it by the tail and Russians prefer to pinch its ribs. If we can finally unite, the poor Devil hasn't got a chance Teeth smile
