Her er dámligt í Føroyum

Her er dámligt í Føroyum
um krossmessutíð,
tá ið foldin han vaknar,
hin ungmoy so blíð,
setir blómur í barm,
setir rósur í hár,
fer í stakkin hin grøna,
sum fríðkast hvørt ár.
Her er dámligt í Føroyum,
tá hvør rødd rópar:
Vár, tað er vár!

Her er fagurt í Føroyum
um hásummartíð,
Nú er gullvovin kápan,
í vár hon fór í,
tí at nú er hon brúður,
nú høvur ber krans,
summarfuglur í ong treður
lættliga dans.
Her er vakurt í Føroyum,
tó ov lítið vit geva tí ans.

Her er dámligt í Føroyum
um eftirárstíð,
tá ið akur og ong standa
bognandi síð,
tá ið fuglurin starvast
og titar í kring,
venur ungar til ferð,
stevnir frændum á ting.
Her er dámligt í Føroyum,
tá tað ljómar um fjallanna ring.

Her er vakurt í Føroyum
um háveturstíð,
tá ið kavin hann skínur
og glitrar í líð;
tá ið nykurin spennir
út tak yvir høll,
stjørnur kappast við mána
at lýsa á vøll.
Her er vakurt í Føroyum,
tá við ísgráum hjálm'
standa fjøll.

Her er fagurt í Føroyum!
Tó fagrari var,
um tú virdi títt heim,
so sum tað unnir tær.
Minst, at so var tað siður --
og er tað væl enn:
Virðir heim títt tú ei,
tú ei telist blant menn.
Her er vakurt í Føroyum --
bert at allir vit tonktu sum menn!

It’s lovely here in the Faroes

It’s lovely here in the Faroes,
on Day of the Cross1*,
when the earth beneath wakes,
that maiden so kind,
sets blooms in her* bosom,
and roses in her hair,
she wears a gown of green,
which grows lovelier each year.
It’s lovely here in the Faroes,
when every voice calls:
Spring, it is spring!

It’s lovely here in the Faroes
at midsummer time,
Now caped is the land in gold
which spring greeted,
and now it is a bride,
now bearing a wreath crown,
the summer birds in the meadow
smoothly dance.
It’s lovely here in the Faroes,
though little attention we give it.

It's lovely here in the Faroes
in autumn time*,
when fields and meadows stand
in long expanse,
when birds tirelessly build
and frolic about,
the young ones hurry out,
on to nature's wonders.
It's lovely here in the Faroes,
when the sounds of the mountains do ring.

It’s lovely here in the Faroes
in midwinter time,
when the snow so shines
and glistens on the hill;
when the nix spins
a roof with its strands,
and stars compete with the moon
to light up the fields.
It’s lovely here in the Faroes,
when icy at their helms
stand the fells.

It’s lovely here in the Faroes!
Though fairer it was,
if you cherish your home,
it will thus love you back.
Remember that such was custom --
and still it is held:
If you love not your home,
you are not among men.
It's lovely here in the Faroes --
for all of those whom we hold as folk!

Author's comments:

1* I have no idea what this holiday is called in English, I had to look it up because I didn’t even know what it was.

2* The explicit characterization of nature as feminine is in the original lyrics, it isn’t an artistic choice on my part.
