(Hokorobi gokko) (English translation)

Tearing Apart Together

Could we possibly have fallen in love?
Am I all you can see?
I don't believe we could just pass by and not notice each other

I could only show you a life that gets looked down upon1
Despite not knowing who decided that, we went on together
The sudden warm mood feels like an itchy pain
These signs of happiness don't suit me, I'm not used to them.

Something I couldn't be saved from
I don't know where help could come from
If I could become a hero, if I could become a hero,
Finally, that happy ending you've wanted would come about2
You feel this way, but...

Could we possibly have fallen in love?
Am I all you can see?
I don't believe we could just pass by and not notice each other
"Bye, bye" "I'm sorry" "I won't do it again"
Sorry for my negative thinking
I want to break free of it
I've thought about you more than ever.

Glico, chocolate, pineapple
In life, those who make the first goal win
The faster we go, the better it is
I also don't know who decided this, but
We continue around the edge of something, picking up BBs as we go
I put them in my pocket. Will this make me a hero?

As the edge of a coffee mug reaches further out
It seems the sour within becomes more stimulating
So as I look at you, I think the increasing distance between us isn't bad

Like how the songwriter writes his lyrics of
Life and the things in it that aren't so bad
The melody reduces its bitter aftertaste just a little
Saving me from my harmful circumstances is like
Catching you for just a moment
My imagination is still running wild, but it's OK to hold little dreams like this, right?

Could we possibly have fallen in love?
Am I all you can see?
I don't believe we could just pass by and not notice each other
Not wasting any kind of affection
Continuously picking it back up is OK, right?3
Looking at you is like changing my beliefs
And like not changing them at all

Let's agree to pretend that we're lovers
Those feelings we hold just might be real
They start out mostly as imitation
And that might continue, but...

  • 1. The subject and indirect object of this line are ambiguous in the original Japanese.
  • 2. I read the use of そんな in the final line of this stanza to indicate that the subject changes in the final thought.
  • 3. The line refers to the affection mentioned in the previous line.
Thanks!

This translation is my own. I'm OK with repositing, but please attribute the translation to Subeki Subtitles and link to my original translation here.

I feel that my Japanese is good enough that my translations are good reproductions of the original, but they may not be perfect. I'm always learning and improving so at some point, I may go back to this translation to make it better. If you see anything that should be fixed, please let me know!

Author's comments:

The title can be read in a lot of other ways such as "smiling together", "pretending to tear apart" or "pretending to smile". The title's ambiguity might be intentional, but I'm not sure. I went with Tearing Apart Together since it sounds evocative in English and it fits the song's theme of "absence makes the heart grow fonder."

This song was pretty difficult to translate and I might have made some mistakes. I may come back later to edit things when I get more experience. In the meantime, please feel free to suggest improvements!
