This is a hard song to translate due to the way the language is used, which is sort of a mixture between "poetic" and "folksy".
The basic premise is that the singer is asking their partner not to go to work one day so they can "test" how much they can truly stand/love each other and how good their relationship is, outside of the typical "get the groceries/do the chores" humdrum daily life.
However, the most important part of the song, in my humble opinion, is the singer's worry that they are repeating her father's mistake, who slowly lost touch with her mother, which in turn makes her question what I think is the most important message of the song:
By choosing to be with the person you're with, what other life dreams are you giving up?
