Í Noreg búðu raskir menn

Í Noreg búðu raskir menn
teir kundu væl svørð at brúka,
gyltan hjálm á høvdi bóru,
vildu for ongum lúta.
Glymur dansar í høll,
dans sláið í ring!
Glaðir ríða Noregs menn
til Hildar ting.

Í Víkini vaks ein maður upp,
Haraldur nevndur at navni,
víða gitin í Noregs landi
bæði av verki og gagni.

Hann svór tann eið við Ása-Tór:
"Eg ei mítt hár hitt fríða
skeri, fyrr enn Noregs menn
míni boð á lýða!"

Treyðir trælkast fríir menn,
fyrr er at rýma úr landi
og sigla yvir tann salta sjógv,
tó har býðst mikil vandi.

Vundu teir upp seglini,
stýrdu í havið vestur,
hildu leið at Føroyalandi
so mangir garpar reystir.

Bygdu borg á Føroyalandi,
sum søgur ganga frá,
fríir livdu norskir menn
vívi og børnum hjá.
Glymur dansur í høll,
dans sláið í ring!
Glaðir ríða Noregs menn
til Hildar ting.

Submitter's comments:

After Harald Fairhair took control of all privately owned land within Norway and required taxes to be paid on it, many people fled to seek new lands, i.e. the Faroe Islands.

In Norway lived skillful men

In Norway lived skillful men
they knew well their way with a sword,
with golden helms upon their heads,
determined to bow to none.
Thunder rolls in the halls,
dance all in a ring!
Merrily ride Norway's men
to Hildr's meet!

Down in the inlets grew up one man,
Haraldr as he goes by in name,
Widely renowned in the land Norway
both by venture and by craft.

He swore this oath by Ása-Thor:
"I shall not my hair so fair
cut short, before Norway's men
do obey my command!"

Languid were free men enslaved,
before fleeing from that their land
and sailing over that salty sea,
though there they tempted peril.

They wound up the boat sails then,
steered westward toward the sea,
took the path to the lands of Faroe
so many brave men aboard.

They built a town in these Faroe lands,
as history will tell,
freely lived the Norwegians
wives and children in tow.
Thunder rolls in the halls,
dance all in a ring!
Merrily ride Norway's men
to Hildr's meet.

Thanks!
