Komm, Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht! - Der Einsiedler

Komm, Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht!
Wie steigst du von den Bergen sacht,
Die Lüfte alle schlafen,
Ein Schiffer nur noch, wandermüd',
Singt übers Meer sein Abendlied
Zu Gottes Lob im Hafen.

Die Jahre wie die Wolken gehn
Und lassen mich hier einsam stehn,
Die Welt hat mich vergessen,
Da tratst du wunderbar zu mir,
Wenn ich beim Waldesrauschen hier
Gedankenvoll gesessen.

O Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht!
Der Tag hat mich so müd' gemacht,
Das weite Meer schon dunkelt,
Laß ausruhn mich von Lust und Not,
Bis daß das ew'ge Morgenrot
Den stillen Wald durchfunkelt.

Come, our comfort, quiet night! - The hermit

Come, our comfort, quiet night,
you climb down from the wooded height,
asleep are all the breezes;
in praise of God a sailor sings,
across the sea and port it rings,
the weary world it pleases.

Like clouds the years pass on their own
and leave me standing here alone -
forgotten and forsaken;
then wondrously you came to me,
when I through murm'ring wood and lea
my pensive path had taken.

O come my comfort, quiet night!
I’m weary from a hard day’s fight,
the wide sea now is dark’ning.
Day’s joy, day’s pain may die away,
till an eternal break of day
through quiet woods is sparkling.
