The original meaning of a barge came from the Latin word barga.This referred to a flat bottom boat used on inland waterways to transport various items. Much later its name and definition changed from the Latin barga to the French barque. Its description also changed to define a three masted sailing ship that could navigate the open seas. Both transported cargo. I think the confusion in translating barco to barca, is that you must continue to spell it barque while intending to describe the original flat bottom boat-barga. This type of boat is like a canoe or ferry. It moves through water with the aid of a ferryman using a pole to navigate inland waterways such as rivers or canals. It had multiple purposes, and was used to transport all sorts of cargo, food and people.This method was used extensively throughout the Aztec and Mayan empires. In my opinion, the barga/barque/barco/barca in the song is referring to a ferry, raft or a canoe. In this case, it was made of gold and was intended to transport souls to an unknown world. I have given the translation a more poetic meaning, rather than a literal, word for word translation. I wanted to convey the emotions of the couple about to separate forever.
