The Middle of My Novel
And so goes life, so goes time:
morning, snow in spring.
And so go the days, so go people—
a race after love or money.
We see nothing that goes by.
A bit at a time, the present
is weighed down by the past.
We are mere passers-by.
It's the middle of my novel.
It's the middle of my story.
I walk on the wire of time.
My balance bar—it's my memory.
In the middle of my love,
my sorrows, my anger,
I would like to reverse course
but without going backwards.
Like a child,
the entire heart
in the middle
of my novel.
Me too—I lost, I won
but I never knew how to cheat.
Me too—I have grown estranged from
true friends made in a summer.
But at the time of the judgment—
the weighing of days—
if I lived a thousand years,
I would always lean left.
It's the middle of my novel.
It's the middle of my story.
I walk on the wire of time.
My balance beam—it's my memory.
In the middle of my love,
my sorrows, my anger,
I would like reverse course
but without going backwards.
Like a child,
the entire heart
in the middle
of my novel.
