Quick and dirty, so not great, but someone can maybe improve on this for me.
'Il a fallu que je connaisse ce que la vie a de meilleur'
Would translate something like 'I had to know what life has (that was) better' so I took some liberties.
'Il existe au milieu du temps la possibilité dune île'
and my translation here is a bit of a romantic guess, based on the english use of 'milieu'. Literally it means 'there exists in the middle of time the possibility of an island'; or it could mean 'there exists in this milieu of time... '
I suppose I'd have to read the Houellebecq novel (and speak better French) before I really knew.
