Translation

The public school

In Saint-Jean-Brevelay, our local public school
Was small and very, very poor: too many panes
Were missing -and frankly, that seemed to be the rule -
For us to try to stick
Some cardboard squares in vain.

For one must see clearly when the master explains.
So, the wind blew through these sorts of basement-windows
And under our school-smocks, we were often times cold.
To top it all, we had an episodic floor,

And one knows that the roof-water mixed with the clay
Makes up muddy puddles of the handsomest sort,
Yet, in that so poor school, I learnt things anyway :

Calculation, spelling, French history as well,
The fourteenth of July, Valmy, the Carmagnole,
Progress, and its setbacks, and -always - its success.
