L'infrangersi azzurro [How Far I'll Go]

Sto ammirando il bell'infrangersi azzurro
E il fruscio calmo e fresco
Va colmando il vuoto in me
L'acqua mi sussurra piano e dolce
e, mormorando il mio nome,
Mi prega di scegliere

Son di fronte a una strada con più vie
E la voce in me canta più poesie
Ma ogni onda è un suono di melodie
Che io sento mie...

Quella linea celeste dipinta sui mari
Nasconde un dono dalle onde avvolto
Soffia il vento e mi sfiora
con gracili mani il mio volto
Scoprirò qual è il suo dono, se viaggerò

Però si diffonde qui nell'aria
Un buon profumo di gran gioia
Vive tanto amore in noi
Devo avere a cuore la mia gente
l'isola e la sua storia
Ognuno ha il suo compito.

Io li porterò fino ai cieli blu
Basta metterci una pietra su
Ma il lamento che invano soffoco
Grida forte in me!

Translation

The light-blue [waves] breaking

I'm admiring the beautiful [sight of] light-blue [waves] breaking
And the rustle, so fresh and quiet,
is slowly filling up the emptiness inside of me
Water's whispering to me softly and sweetly
and, murmuring my name,
It's imploring me to choose

I have come across a road with several ways out
And the voice inside is singing several poems
But each waves is a sound of melodies
[Melodies] which I feel belong to me

That celestial sky-blue1 line painted above seas
Hides a present wound by waves
The wind is blowing and it's touching
with delicate hands my face
I'll find out what its present is, if I travel

But a good scent of a great joy
is spread out here in the air.
Lots of love live within us.
I need have my people
the island and its story close to my heart.
Everybody has its duty2

I will bring them up to blue skies
I just need to put a stone above it in order to leave [my past] behind 3
But the lament which I stifle in vain
Is crying strong in me

The most beautiful sun's twinkle is shining on the sea
A present is hidden inside of those golden rays
Each wind's breath winds [my] heart to give me
The strength to go beyond that blue limit

And the waves' sound will know how to guide me
Though I don't know where I will go...
I hear songs and calls behind clouds
The journey which I'll face is starting!

  • 1. "Celeste" means both "celestial"-"something which belongs to the sky" and "sky-blue"-"the color of the sky".
  • 2. These verses are actually inverted. Literally they means:
"But is spread out here in the air / a good scent of a great joy / Lots of love live within us // I need have close to my heart my people / the island and its story / Everybody has its duty"
  • 3. "Basta metterci una pietra su" literally means: "I just need to put a stone above it". But the sentence "Mettere una pietra sopra qualcosa" (lit: "Put a stone above something) is an idiomatic one, which means: "Forget something", "Turn the page in order to forget something" and so on... So "Basta metterci una pietra su" can both means: "I just need to put a stone above it" and also: "I just need to forget it" (I mean: "forget my past - forget who I am - forget the call of the sea" and so on...)
