Oh, Mami Yamase! I've listened to a song of hers (Heartbreak Cafè) and it was pretty good!
If I recall correctly, she had a store in the Takeshita Department of Harajuku, a simbol of idol fame!
Idols like Wink, Yui Asaka, Marina Watanabe and ofcourse Akina Nakamori had stores there!
Yeah, I didn't know she could sing quite well. She sounded different than when she spoke. Few days ago I just saw her on TV (*funnily enough, it was after I decided to translate her song), her voice and the way she speaks still sounds cute like when she was young.
Matsumoto Iyo and Nori-P also used to have stores.
Yamase Mami (born: October 2, 1969), real name: Yamase Mamiko, was an idol from late 1980s later turned into presenter and variety show personality. She already aspired to be an idol since she was very young. When she was in junior high school, she was frequently approached by talent scouts on the streets and was famous for rejecting them all. That was because she believed if she was going to enter entertainment industry anyway, she'd rather to sign contract with reliable big name agency. In 1983, she applied for "HoriPro Talent Scout Caravan" - a very famous audition at that time that has produced some big idols - but rejected. Her second try in 1985 was a success, she won it and made her debut as idol singer in March 1986.
As a singer, Yamase Mami has released a total of 10 singles, 1 duet single and 5 original albums. Her total song sales are about 174,861 copies. She was known for singing well. Yamase Mami also has acting career, which she has appeared in 12 dramas (1987 - 2000, and appeared again in a drama in 2020) and 5 movies (1988 - 1994).
Her song sales aren't that high, her acting career was decent, but Yamase Mami actually found her success somewhere else. With her unique voice, cheerful and outspoken personality, and an interesting talker, Yamase Mami appeared in more and more variety shows since 1986 as regular and sometimes presenter. She has appeared in a lot of variety shows since then and is still an active variety show personality even now.
Yamase Mami in variety show, 1988:
* Trivia: althought didn't look like it in close up shot, Yamase Mami was actually tall. She said it herself that she was probably too tall for idol. At 167 cm, she was probably the second tallest among 1980s female idol. (*as comparison with female celebrities in that era: Wada Akiko ("Uta no Top Ten" presenter, probably the tallest female Japanese celebrity in that era) : 174 cm, Kihara Aki (tallest Onyanko girl) : 169 cm, Yamada Kuniko (a tall presenter): 168 cm, Hayami Yuu: 164 cm, Kudo Shizuka: 163 cm, Saito Yuki & Nanno: 161 cm, Seiko & Akina: 160 cm, Kyon2 & Asaka Yui: 153 cm, Yuuyu (shortest) : 151 cm).
This song is her debut song. Released in March 21, 1986, it reached #21 in Oricon chart with 39,940 sales, which is her highest position and her highest selling song.
This seems like a second MV:
Her live performances:
^ in "Let's Go Idol" music program
^ probably in "Music Station" since I heard Hayami Yuu's voice.
^ in "Yan Yan Uta Studio" (0:40)
in other music programs:
