Alejandro Sanz - Não Me Compares (English translation)

English translation

Don't Compare Me

Now that our memories have faded, to soft moans
Much paler then snow falling there on the screen
Now that the rain falls, in this room
Extinguishing the candles on the craft that once glowed in me

Now that time sings its verses, crying,
And now that the world is finally awake
Now that you're lost in a ferocious silence
Why should we unravel these knots?

Now we see clearly and we can see ourselves behind a grudge
Now I will tell you where I came from and the paths passion took
Now our destiny is calm and we discovered ourselves in this hurricane
Now I will tell you where I came from and of what my heart is made

I came from the air
That made you skin feel dry, dear
I am the street where you used to meet him
Don't compare me
I descended to the earth on an artist's brush, for your sake
It's unforgivable that I don't look like him... I don't look like him, I don't look like anybody...

Now that the cats are prowling
Searching for scraps, meowing the mournful song
Now that you were left speechless
Compare it, compare it with such passion

Now we can look at our reflections
In the rear-view mirror, not feeling afraid
Now I'll teach you where I came from
And the wounds that love caused me
Now, let's not argue about that
I only want us to have a good talk
If you want, I'll tell you why I want you
And if you want me, I'll tell you why not

You don't know
Where I've been after everything, my dear
I'm the key
To the door of where you've found someone

Don't compare me
Don't try to find in her the gazes I gave you
It's unforgivable
That I don't look like her

Then, don't say
That someone else touches you like I did
I hope it all ends
And that you leave without knowing

And forevermore
Nobody will ever touch you like I did
I hope it all ends
I'm your soul
You're the air I breathe

Let them tear us apart, if they think they can
Let them tear us apart, let they do that
Let them break us apart, let they do that
I'm your soul and you're my luck
Let them tear us apart, if they think they can
Let them tear us apart, let they do that
Let them break us apart, let they do that
I'm your soul and you're my luck

I thought the translation was great, just a few places I thought it might sound a bit better with a slightly different word choice.

V1: Now that our memories have faded, to soft moans, much paler then snow falling there on the screen.
Now that the rain falls, in this room, extinguishing the candles on the craft that once glowed in me.

V2: Now that time sings its verses, crying,
And now that the world is finally awake.
Now that you're lost in a ferocious silence
Tell me, Why should we *unravel these knots?

V3: *Now we can see clearly,
Looking past the bitterness at our true selves,
*Now I will tell you where I came from and the paths that this passion took
Now our destiny has *stilled and we've *discovered ourselves in this hurricane
Now I *will tell you where I *came from and the *substance of my heart.

V4: I came from the air
That *parched your *skin, my darling.
I am the *quiet lane where you once met with him.
Don't compare me!
I descended *to earth on an artist's brush, for your sake.
Unforgivable! That I don't *resemble him... *No, not him, not anyone...

V5: Now that the cats are *out prowling. Searching for *scraps, *mewling a *mournful song.
Now that you've *fallen silent
Now, Compare it!
Compare it,
Compare it with *that passion

V6: Now we can *gaze without fear at our reflections In the rear-view mirror.
Now I'll teach you where *I came from
And the wounds *I've borne for love.
Let's not argue. I only want *to speak with you softly.
If you want me to, I'll tell you why * I want you And if you want me to, I'll tell you why *I don't.

V7: You *can't comprehend
Where *I've been after everything, my love
I am the key
*That fits the lock of the door * where you found someone.

V8: Don't compare me
Don't *seek in her the gaze I gave.
Unforgivable! That I'm not her

V9: Don't tell me!
*That their touch was like mine
*May it perish
*And you depart, never knowing

V10: No, not in all eternity, will anyone touch you as did.
May it perish
I'm your soul You're the air I breathe

V11: Let them *tear us apart, if they think they can.
Let them *tear us apart, *Let them try.
Let them *tear us apart, *let them try if they want.
I'm your soul and you're my *fortune

Sorry it took me 4 years to check this comment. I've finally updated the translation, I just changed some stuff to avoid a very poetical language.

Typo in your translation: "That dried your sking" should be "That dried your skin". I have more things to point out, but since you didn't reply to the last guy who made comments, I won't waste my time writing them out if you don't show you're alive.

Hi. As a matter of fact, here I am, as active as ever Regular smile

I didn't see that comment til now, so I only could update this translation now, 4 years after. As for the typo, corrected. Thanks for letting me know.

"It's unforgivable that I don't look like him... I don't look like him, I don't look like anybody..."

Being Brazilian like me, you know that "parecer" can mean more than just physical looks. It could mean "to be alike in behavior" as well. However, your translation makes it sound like the author is talking only about physical appearance, which he very well could be, but we have no way of knowing. To eliminate this specificity, I would change it to: "It's unforgivable that he and I are not alike... I'm not like him, nor anybody".

Same for "Que eu não seja igual a ela" = That I don't look like her -> That I'm not like her

"Don't try to find in her the gazes I gave you" You translated "gazes" in the plural when the original calls for the singular.

" Let them tear us apart, let they do that
Let them break us apart, let they do that"

Notice how you changed "tear" to "break" when the original doesn't change anything. Why?

Hi, you're right. I have updated all these accordingly. I was still a beginner in Spanish at the time I submitted this translation, not that I've mastered it, but I don't make some basic mistakes anymore.

As for 'tear' / 'break', there are two different senses. You can separate two parts of a thing or break two individuals apart. In 'tear us apart' I thought of the idea of a couple being reduced to two individuals that not necessarily are in love with each other any longer. With 'break us apart', I tried to convey the idea of a couple against whom someone tries to separate (as in put them away from each other - distancing themselves, something like that). It's very subtle, but that's what I thought when translating it.
