The Summer Girl

* kissing sfx *
The summer girl...
...looks so good in her bikini
She is so sexy, I'm getting dizzy
* kissing sfx *
Passing through the sea breeze...
...on my skateboard,
...I'm coming to you, wait for me
You're the one I always miss
(~I scream, you scream~)
This is the love season
There's a beach umbrella
Let's pull it down a little bit and hide under it
You scream when I shout...
..."I love you". Miss, wait...miss

* kissing sfx *
The summer girl...
...catches the attention of the entire beach
Her popularity soars, I'm getting worried
* kissing sfx *
When you're going to surf,
...I'll draw your portrait...
...and lend you my surfboard
You drive me crazy about you
(~I scream, you scream~)
This is the love season
On the sand, I wrote you...
...a love letter, it's embarrassing
You scream when I shout...
..."I love you". Miss, wait...miss

You drive me crazy about you
(~I scream, you scream~)
This is the love season
On the sand, I wrote you...
...a love letter, it's embarrassing
You scream when I shout...
..."I love you". Miss, wait...miss

Sakakibara Ikue (born: May 8, 1959) was a top idol in late 1970s. In 1976, she won the first ever HoriPro Talent Scout Caravan (* a very popular audition program held from 1976 - 2020 by a famous agency company: HoriPro. A lot of idols came from this audition. One of HoriPro biggest idols was Hori Chiemi), immediately moved to Tokyo, transfered to Horikoshi High School and started her entertainment activity by appearing in movie and commercials. Ikue made her debut as idol singer in January 1, 1977 (some idols debuted in the same year as her included Oba Kumiko and Takada Mizue). Her real name was hard to pronounce, several stage names were proposed but none sounded good enough, so it was decided to keep using her real name as stage name with the argument that "although it's hard to pronounce, but once you remember this name, it'll be hard to forget"

As a singer, Sakakibara Ikue has released a total of 39 singles and 17 original albums. There's no information about her total sales but incomplete data showing her ten highest selling singles have sold a total of 1,196,000 copies. Sakakibara Ikue has performed 6 times consecutively in Kohaku Uta Gassen 1978 - 1983. She has won 13 awards from 1976 - 1981.

She was also a popular idol who appeared in a lot of dramas and commercials. As an actress, she has starred in 59 dramas (1977 - 2021) and 6 movies (1976 - 2022). She has also been regular cast in a lot of variety shows and tv programs from 1977 until now. In late 1970s, she appeared regularly in Japanese Disney programs, she even voiced Mickey Mouse in Japanese dub back then.

Ikue was also known for her role in "Peter Pan" musical stage play. She played as Peter Pan one month a year, every summer for seven years

^ That was a popular show with high number of seats booked every time. She left the "Peter Pan" play in 1987 after her marriage.

And of course she has met all the big idols in the first half of 1980s since she was the presenter of "The Top Ten"

Fun fact, Ikue was marketed along side three other idols (Mizue Takada and Yukiko Shimizu) as the "Fresh Sannin Musume", and Ikues catchphrase was "100 Milion yen Cinderella"

And talking about HoriPro, somehow for every super successful idol they debuted from this audition, there were a few before that didn't have much success TT. Like after Ikue, the 2nd (Mayuko Nishimura), 3rd (Keiko Nose), 4th (Rie Hiki ((She played wendy in the Peter Pan play with Ikue!))) and 5th (Norie Hayashi) winner would all have very poor sales or would have a very brief carrer (Ad example Ries debut song peaked at number 199 on the oricon chart, and usually a singers debut song is their most bought one because of the exitment of a new debut TT), and the same happened after Chiemi Hori TT (But this was even outside of the audition idols, their regular ones would have the same fate, with ad example Chiemi Kai never entering the top 100 despite her excelent songs TT)

And thanks for the translation (^∇^*)

Seems like it was a trend back in the 1970s to pair three new idol singers following the Momoe-Junko-Masako trio. 😅

Yeah, HoriPro didn't seem to have many big singers but somehow they were very popular choice, a go-to agency for girls who wanted to become an idol singer. Ito Miki was also from HoriPro.

It's sad to see those singers whose songs ranked in #100+ after all the effort to promote their singles. Asaka Yui also used to be one of these people but she could make a leap from #100+ to #1 , and even being seen as equal to  Miporin and Shizuka for awhile.

Yeah, you're welcome 😆
