O Jeito É Ir Embora (English translation)

English translationEnglish
A A

Looks Like I Better Go

Every day, an enormous weight on my shoulders
I thought it was from sleeping wrong
Every day, an enormous weight on my back
I thought it was from sitting funny1
But it's you
But it's you

So looks like what I have to do is get out of here2
Take my things and get out of here
Say goodbye and get out of here
Give you a hug and get out of here

I was complaining all day about a pain in my bones
I thought I must have broken something somewhere
I did a neck compress to see if it would help
Maybe it's from all this tossing myself down3
But it's you
But it's you

So looks like what I have to do is leave
Take my things and leave
Say goodbye and leave
Give you a hug and leave

So looks like what I have to do is leave
Take my things and leave
Say goodbye and leave
Give you a hug and leave

I lied to you
When I said
That I'd understand
Everything you had to say
Turns out
I just don't care anymore

  • 1. Where I have 'sitting funny' it literally says 'sitting to/on the side'. I went ahead and trusted my instinct that this referred to sitting weirdly, but I may be wrong. Just as a disclaimer.
  • 2. I love this song but this line was a nightmare to translate. None of the phrases I came up with feel exact so I'll break it down a little more here... "O jeito é ir imbora" literally means "The way is to go away". 'Jeito' means 'way of doing something, skill'. The phrasing implies that there was a problem and the speaker has just recently come to the conclusion that the only response to the problem that will improve things is to leave. It's a really slippery phrase that can't easily be captured in English but hopefully that explanation helped a little.
  • 3. Think of tossing yourself down on a bed/couch in exhaustion. 'Jogar', here translated as 'tossing', can mean both 'to throw/toss' and 'to play (a sport, a video game)'. (It can also mean 'put yourself out there/give it your best', as in 'se jogar na vida'.) But 'playing laying down' made so little sense that I placed my bets on the 'throwing' translation.
Thanks!
