Gullah, also called Geechee, Gullah-English,
and Sea Island Creole English, is a creole language
spoken by the Gullah/Geechee people.
It is based on different varieties of English and
languages of West and Central Africa. Closely
related varieties are spoken in the Bahamas,
namely Bahamian Creole.
The Gullahs or Geechees are descendants of slaves
who lived and still live on the coastal islands and
lowcountry along the coast of the southeastern
United States. Gullah tends to be the preferred name
in North and South Carolina, Geechee in Georgia
and Florida.
