  The sunflower, known as 'soniashnyk' in Ukrainian, is one of the most recognized symbols of Ukraine due to its cultural significance, political symbolism, and economic importance. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Historical Significance: Sunflowers have been grown in Ukraine since the mid-18th century. They were introduced to Ukraine in the mid-18th century, and Ukrainians snacked on the flower’s seeds or crushed them into oil.
  2. Economic Importance: Sunflowers play a crucial role in the Ukrainian economy. The oil, used in cooking or exported to other countries, proved popular in this Eastern European country.
  3. Symbol of Peace: Throughout Ukraine's history, the sunflower has been used as a symbol of peace. In June 1996, ministers from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine marked Ukraine’s nuclear weapon disarmament by planting sunflowers at the Pervomaysk closed missile base.
  4. Symbol of Resistance and Unity: Recently, the sunflower has emerged as a "global symbol of resistance, unity, and hope" due to the ongoing war. This movement began with a viral video shared by February 24, 2022, where a Ukrainian woman in Henychesk gives sunflower seeds to armed Russian soldiers, saying, "Take these seeds so sunflowers grow here when you die".

  The ubiquitous presence of the sunflower in the villages and countryside of Ukraine has made it an unofficial national symbo. Today, people around the world are embracing the bright bloom as a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine.
