Elder (feat. Mattia)

It was the sunny evening of a summer day
And they were tired still with the desire to explore
The most inaccessible woods, the paths of cats
Carved through raspberry brambles
And then down the hill the next day
With bags full of sandwiches and some snacks
Searching and then discovering by mistake
Not even remotely expecting it
A new universe, a world just for them
Just like the bridge that connects Terabithia to the real world
The road meandered through elderberry barks
A small river flowed almost dry
Leaving a wide gap
Which would soon become their main route
The pocketknife in hand and too many thorns in the knees
To make their way through that hostile jungle
To the most beautiful area, the best spot
Their place would there take a shape, a color

We'd run at breakneck speed among the leaves and brushwood
We'd sing songs that no one ever invented
We'd build under a burning sun and nothing mattered
The water tower on the ridge was sticking out from behind the foliage
It was a sea route, the sundial of my days
Nothing remains of everything that has been and that we've loved
We are all that's left
We are all that's left

And they began to work on it for days
To mold that environment under a blue sky
That had just opened, like a better chapter
That had given everything a little more sense
Life there flowed like that every hour
Fueled by uninterrupted efforts
And the first fruits of the undertaking were steps in the soil
Hand-carved one by one from morning until night
And next to them then a railing of branches appeared
And a flat ledge across the slope
In which stood what was a second home
Green haven of adventures and games
That made them feel like kids again even if they were grown up
It was a primeval palace, but a personal world
Laughter, scratches and escapades
As many as the days of a summer unlike any other
That you can live if you close your eyes but keep your mind wide open

We'd run at breakneck speed among the leaves and brushwood
We'd sing songs that no one ever invented
We'd build under a burning sun and nothing mattered
The water tower on the ridge was sticking out from behind the foliage
It was a sea route, the sundial of my days
Nothing remains of everything that has been and that we've loved

But a day like any other, without too much warning
Older boys arrived with hatred on their faces
And with a stick in hand they imposed their rule
Smashing everything while the others were fighting in vain
And of that summer dream built with love
In an instant colorless debris remained
They went away leaving there a little hope for the future
And a last farewell to the elderflowers

We'd run at breakneck speed among the leaves and brushwood
We'd sing songs that no one ever invented
We'd build under a burning sun and nothing mattered
The water tower on the ridge was sticking out from behind the foliage
It was a sea route, the sundial of my days
Nothing remains of everything that has been and that we've loved
We are all that's left
We are all that's left
We are all that's left
Of everything that has been
Nothing remains but a memory
We are all that's left
