Shots in the air

Versions: #1#2
My mother says: Boy, get some rest,
take a break. But I'm supposed to go on the street says Farin Urlaub1.
Yes, OK, now I'll stay here but I'm alone up against a wall
There's only me here, nothing else, only this stone in my hand.
It's a lonely war against the mess that surrounds me
the fucked up mess that apparently no-one but me can see,
but like if nobody looks outside,
they'd rather be on the sofa watching
Wife Swap or Farmer seeks a Wife2

and yes, naturally, only for laughs and only in passing.
But compared to the victims there3 your own life is pretty terrific
A dog doesn't bite if he barks4 and everything is fine
as long as those on RTL5 are still a bit dumber than you.

And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
I go to war but no-one comes with me.
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)
Sadly I'm the only one out here again.
And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
but there's no reaction only complaints about the noise.
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)
the revolution, or Berlin Day and Night6 .

You'll not be disappointed if you never expect anything
and before you do anything wrong, better do nothing at all,
Someone will say something sometime,
or else you just have to be satisfied with what you have
And even if everything's gone to pot, you're broke and just can't do anything
then just be simply proud of your land,
Or blame a couple of other poor swine
Hey how would that be then for the people in the asylum seekers centre?

And no, I was never against everything, I was always against you
so a long time ago I started to come to terms with things,
and that's exactly what I didn't want to do: I've been here far too long already,
I must get away from here because otherwise I'll sometime get to be like you.

And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
I go to war but no-one comes with me.
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)
Sadly I'm the only one out here again.
And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
but there's no reaction, only complaints about the noise.
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)
the revolution, or Berlin day and night.

Nobody cares about anything except the cell phone contract
(and I paint everything black).
With 390 Euros Hartz7 security you don't get far in the health food shop
(and I paint everything black)
Your crappy comment was of course only a joke, OK?
(and I paint everything black)
All night long serving drunken nitwits in the bar
for 7 dollars an hour on the black.

And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)
And I fire into the air (bang, bang, bang)
Three shots in the air (bang, bang, bang)

  • 1. the nickname of a german Rock singer who likes to go on holiday (hence the nickname)
  • 2. two appalling television series; Farmer seeks a Wife was loosely based on an English version of a Swiss original, there are some details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmer_Wants_a_Wife
  • 3. the tv shows' "entertainment value" consisted of getting unsuspecting participants into embarrasing situations, so victims is a fair description; or one could just all them "losers"
  • 4. Empty vessels make the most noise.
  • 5. RTL was the channel which broadcast those shows in Germany
  • 6. Another German TV series, broadcast on RTL2, and about as awful as the two previously mentioned
  • 7. The Minister responsable for a recent change in social security for the long term unemployed

Some of the things you translated aren't correct.
I made my own translation so you could correct your mistakes. There are just a few misunderstandings because you're not a native speaker.
And please feel free to point out the mistakes I made in my translation.

Thanks for that. On things like Harz and Berlin Tag und Nacht I just didn't get the references, and without your help i never would have.

Some of the differences between your translation and mine are just crazy mistakes on my part. Others are harmless differences - things that make no real difference to the meaning and flow well either way; and some things where the meaning isn't different but one version sounds better than the other, and either I've changed y translation (because yours sounded better) of I'll comment on your translation (on its page, rather than here). But I wonder about some of the other diferences - are the differences real or just a matter of personal style?

Anyway, I've changed my version where I'm sure change is useful, but not where I'm unsure - so if I've left things definitely wrong maybe you can let me know what things they are.

The differences are just a matter of personal style
Everything's fine now with your translation
Have a nice evening!~

Those lyrics are quite significant for some movements which are happening today; I don't think some people realise exactly how significant they are or will be in the future. Really great piece of music from Kraftklub.

Already the start of the german lyrics is wrong:
Meine Mutter sagt: Junge geh mal schlafen, fahr'n alle in den Urlaub aber ich soll auf die Straße sagt Farin Urlaub
It must be:
Meine Mutter sagt: Junge geh mal schlafen, fahr' mal in den Urlaub! Aber ich soll auf die Straße sagt Farin Urlaub
That means: My mother says: Boy go sleep, go on holidays (or: have a rest),....

>>Die ganze Nacht besoffene Vollidioten bedienen an der Bar
für 7 Dollar die Stunde aber schwarz..

michealtmichealt    Sun, 12/07/2015 - 22:48

"black" in English often means "not reported to the tax authorities". But it's an adjective, not used as an adverb like "schwarz" in "schwarz arbeiten", the adverb for "black" in this sense is "on the black" (so "shwartz arbeiten" = "to work on the black".

Thanks, nice to know. To translate idioms and puns is quite tricky. But in this case seem to be similarities..

Ooops, i found one more..

>>But compared to the victims there their own life is pretty terrific

michealtmichealt    Sun, 12/07/2015 - 23:12

"the own life" doesn't make sense, it just isn't English.
But yes, "their own life" may be wrong as "eigene" could mean something other than "own", "independent" or "characteristic" doesn't make sense in context but I guess "das eigene leben" could mean "a typical life" (wouldn't use "the" there in English) or "a normal life" if "eigene" can take that meaning. If "eigene" does mean "own" here, then das must be "their" in English, referring to "niemand" in the previous verse, because there is no other meaning that causes "own" to make sense.

AlwinAlwin    Mon, 13/07/2015 - 12:29

Ok, but the following line you translated "as long as those on RTL are still a bit dumber than YOU..." It is the same context, so it would be more understandable to translate: "..compared to the victims there YOUR own life is pretty awesome." Btw.. somebody changed the first lines like i suggested, the translation doesn't match anymore. And yet i have one more suggestion: "Allen ist alles egal" doesn't translate to: "It's all just the same". The meaning is like: Everybody doesn't care about anything" or "Nothing matters to anyone.."

michealtmichealt    Sun, 06/05/2018 - 16:31

Yes, now the second line is fixed i'll change the translation to match.
And you are right, the translation for "Allen ist alles egal" does need to be changed too, so I'm fixing that as well. I originally had "It's all just the same for everyone, except the cellphone contract" for that line, but that sounded too stilted and a bit muddled so I simplified it. But simplified it wrong! I hope it will be right now.

That was in July 2015! Now it's 34 months later and it appears that somehow that last edit got lost (I probably forgot to click on "save"). So I've done it now at last.
