Original lyrics
Sonnet 145
Those lips that Love's own hand did make
Breathed forth the sound that said “I hate”
To me that languished for her sake.
But when she saw my woeful state,
Straight in her heart did mercy come,
Chiding that tongue that, ever sweet,
Was used in giving gentle doom,
And taught it thus anew to greet:
“I hate” she altered with an end
That followed it as gentle day
Doth follow night, who like a fiend
From heaven to hell is flown away.
“I hate” from hate away she threw,
And saved my life, saying “not you.”
- Love's own hand:
the own hand of the goddess of love.

Translation
Sonett 145
Der Mund, den Venus höchstselbst machte,
er flüsterte mir zu „Ich hass'...“.
mir, der ich mich nach ihr verschmachte,
als sie jedoch bemerkte, dass
sie mich im Herzen traf, erregte
ich Mitleid, das den Mund anwies,
der sonst so nett zu sprechen pflegte,
dass er mich doch charmanter grüß'.
„Ich hass'...", dann folgte noch ein Schluss
der wie ein wunderschöner Morgen
nach düst'rer Nacht erscheinen muss,
ganz ohne Feindschaft, ohne Sorgen.
„Ich hass'...“ , und sie erklärte sich
mein Leben rettend: „...doch nicht dich!“
