Original lyrics
Tamo Daleko (Prvobitna Verzija)
Tamo daleko, daleko od mora,
tamo je selo moje, tamo je Srbija
Tamo daleko, gde cveta limun žut,
tamo je srpskoj vojsci jedini bio put
Tamo daleko, gde cveta beli krin
tamo su živote dali zajedno otac i sin
Tamo gde tiha putuje Morava
tamo mi ikona osta i moja krsna slava
Tamo gde Timok pozdravlja Veljkov Grad
tamo mi spališe crkvu u kojoj venčah se mlad
bez otačbine, na Krfu živeh ja
ali sam ponosno klic'o "Živela Srbija!"

There, Far Away
There, far away, far from the sea,
There is my village; there is Serbia.
There, far away, where the yellow lemon blossoms,
There there was only one path for the Serbian Army to take.
There, far away, where the madonna lily blooms,
There father and son gave their lives together.
There, where the gentle Morava flows,
There my icon and my krsna slava have been left behind.
There, where the Timok says hello to Veljko's Town,
There they burned down the church
In which I got married when I was young.
Without a Homeland, I lived in Corfu,
But I proudly did cry: "Long live Serbia!"

Russia is waging a disgraceful war on Ukraine. Stand With Ukraine!
There are many versions of this song, but this is the one considered first and foremost. Given I have come across many contradictory assertions, I am not absolutely certain whether or not these are the exact lyrics of the original (as composed by Serbian musician and WWI soldier Djordje Marinković), but I do know that this is considered the main version nowadays.
In any case, for more information on the history behind "Tamo Daleko", I add the link to this article >> https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamo_daleko

Other notes:
• "Krsna slava" is the celebration of each family's patron saint, which is held on the holy day of the given saint. There is a very important Serbian tradition of celebrating it which goes back to ancient times.
• "Veljko's Town" is Negotin, the third largest city in Timočka Krajina (the "borderland" through which the Timok river flows), in eastern Serbia. It is called this way because of the events which took place during/after the uprising against the Ottomans in the early XIX century, when the famous Serbian hero and haiduk Veljko Petrović was put in charge of the defense of this city by Đorđe Petrović (aka. Karadjordje/Black George) to, as "Vojvoda of Krajina", guard the eastern border of Serbia. Veljko organised and fortified the city, having watchtowers built and trenches dug around it, etc.
Negotin played a significant role in securing the Serbian borderland against the Ottoman army, until July 1813, when Veljko (aged 33) was killed in battle during the defense of the city. After this, the Ottomans conquered Negotin and Krajina entire.
• Corfu is a Greek island off the coast of the Adriatic to which the Serbian army was evacuated by the Allies after what is known as "the Great Retreat" or "Albanian Golgotha" of the Serbian army, civilians and prisoners of war (in total about 400,000 people) through the Accursed Mountains (Prokletije) of Montenegro and Albania during the winter of 1915-16. (After the synchronized attack by forces of the Central Powers [Germany, Austro-Hungary and Bulgaria] that was croaching in on them from three sides, along with the failure of the allied forces to join with them as originally planned, the Serbian army, by now extremely low on ammunition, is considered to have been left with little option but to attempt an escape through these mountains. During the retreat, the Serbian nation experienced one of the greatest sufferings ever recorded, dying by the thousands from starvation, hypothermia, disease and daily enemy attacks (including the first ever air raids on civilian columns, carried out by the Austrian aviation, as well as ambushes on the part of hostile Albanians).
It is estimated that, of the ~400,000 who set off on the Great Retreat, only about 120,000 soldiers and 60,000 civilians survived to be evacuated to the island of Corfu (and Vido).
This march through the Accursed Mountains marks one of the most horrific episodes in modern history, as well as one of the greatest demonstrations of human willpower ever documented.
Also worthy of mention was the Montenegrin Army's heroic stand at Mojkovac, where the huge Austrio-hungarian offensive was repelled by a vastly outnumbered, under-equipped and scantly supplied Montenegrin force under the command of Janko Vukotić between the 6th - 7th of January, 1916 (Orthodox Christmas Eve to Christmas Day). This Montenegrin victory effectively bought the retreating columns of Serbs time and ensured them a safe passage to finally reach the Adriatic coast, where they were evacuated by Allied ships.
However, once evacuated to Corfu the Serbs' ordeal was far from over. In hospitals of the island about 11,000 more people died of disease. The soldiers who managed to survive and recover, immediately joined the allied forces and marched to the front, in the operation that finally succeeded in liberating Serbia and other Balkan countries, and which forced the capitulation of the Central Powers (1918).

During WWI, Serbia lost more than 1,25 million people (over 55% of the male population, about one third of the total population of the country).
