Here is what Baidu Baike (https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E8%8A%B1%E5%BE%A1%E5%A0%82/4983326) says about this word, in Google's translation: «In Japanese traditional culture, it is said that the Flower Festival on April 8 is the birthday of Sakyamuni [aka Buddha]. During this festival, people will decorate the Buddha statue of Sakyamuni with flowers and the Buddhist hall enshrining the Buddha statue, and serve sweet tea to show their devotion to the Buddha and wish the Buddha's birthday. Gradually, this image and beautiful word appeared in Japanese».
  • 3. I'm taking this sentence to have an anastrophe. Another translation option is "The hanamidou that tells us" etc.
  • 4. The typical translation of this sentence is "A petal from a misty flower". And then there's https://www.nautiljon.com/paroles/kuraki+mai/time+after+time+~hana+mau+m... with its «A single petal falls / And brings back a nostalgic song / Once again, softly, in my heart», which is basically my interpretation of this and the next sections. Now, "kasumu" can mean "to be foggy", "to be hazy", and "to blur". If you don't assume anastrophe, the result is "A petal [of] a flower that is foggy/hazy", hence the standard translation, and also the German translation here which says "Misty flowers, a petal", and the two Chinese translations at https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/110398550.html (They tell us spring will end, the flowers and fruits, and a petal of mistflower – hmm, maybe not quite misty, huh?) and at https://www.gdbjsj.com/archives/428.html (The hanamidou which tells us spring will end / A petal of a hazy flower). The Thai translation here, according to Google, says «The fallen flower petals were covered by the mist», so we're still with "misty", but a bit freer. However, what is going on here? I'm persuaded that the petal is bringing back memories, so it's blurring up in the singer's eyes because she's tearing up. Hence why I'm assuming anastrophe of "kasumu", meaning that in "normal Japanese" this line would read 花[の花弁]一枚[が]霞む (and the previous one would be 花御堂[画]春の終わり[を]告げる).
  • 5. Let's do a translation comparison: «And an old song floats back / Gently, even now, into my heart», «And brings back a nostalgic song / Once again, softly, in my heart», «唤醒了 那令人回忆的歌 / 在这心中 现今依然温柔» (It has been awoken that song that makes people remember / In my heart it's still gentle now), «music in memory that came back to listen again / Even now, I still feel warm in my heart.» (Thai translation here), «Es kommt zurück, das Lied der Erinnerung, / zurück in mein Herz auch jetzt ganz zärtlich.» (It comes back, the song of memory, / back in my heart, all gentle even now), «在我心中苏醒而忆起的歌曲 现在依然是如此的优美» (In my heart there has awoken and I've remembered a song It's so graceful still now). So everyone is assigning "yomigaeru" to the song. I'm seeing the memories coming back to life as the singer tears up remembering them, and the song associated with them echoing in her heart with sweet tones.
  • 6. I'm taking this section to be a list of memories. I could read a couple anastrophes in here, and render the last two lines as «Gently holding hands, we walked on the hill, I still haven't forgotten [our] promise». I wouldn't read an anastrophe in l. 2 because "fuku" is in present tense, and while as a relative clause I can render it as past because it's "present relative to the past" so it's past, in a main clause that wouldn't be possible.
  • 7. Thin ice freezing again suggests winter or late autumn, so from the spring where the memories happened, a long time has passed. Me, the Chinese translation at https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/110398550.html, and https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/18201/memories-and-freezing... agree in seeing the voice of the previous line as the memory of this line. No other translation quite does, and several actually translate "memories" in the plural, which of course is possible since Japanese has no plural (except for the very few cases where the -tach or -ra plural markers can be used). I don't see any other way to link this line with the previous than to assume the distant memory is the voice. The fact that, according to Animelyrics, «Kuraki said in an interview that she wanted to evoke an idea of early spring with these words» strikes me as very weird, given the explanation in the Stack Exchange answer.
  • 8. OK, so no-one assigns "you" as the subject to "chikatta". Most translations say "I swore", all the others say "we swore" (or "wir schworten") or leave it ambiguous (that's what the Chinese ones do), but come on! Like, the voice can be heard in the wind, obviously the singer is hearing this swearing as echoing in the wind a long time later, right? And then the exact words are what follows! There's even a volitional, a "let's"! If it was just "We swore we'd meet again" it wouldn't have that volitional, «また会えると誓った» is a structure that exists, right?
  • 9. I bet this "light red season" is spring again, i.e. the season of flowers. The Thai's "swirling pale pink season" agrees with me on that one.
  • 10. Prima facie one would read this as «Though the time where <> were not scattered doesn't come back», but I believe we should read it as «Although, speaking of the time etc etc, [I] won't [ever] go back [to it]», so the singer is comparing herself and the addressee of the song to the dancing flowers which are all separated from each other like the two of them are.
  • 11. "hirari" is an onomatopoeia for "lightly, nimbly".
  • 12. Every translation reads "you ni" as "similar" or "like, as if", but I looked it up and there is "you ni naru" meaning "to come to" or "to reach the point of", and that's where I'm reading here. This also lets me imagine that, when they touch the water, they sink, just like how missing her darling makes the singer sink into greater pain, which links the two lines of this section together.
  • 13. This line is so ambiguous that there are at least two different translations online, plus the ambiguous Chinese ones, and then there's mine. The literal translation would be "To the degree of thinking valuable, sadness-inducing". Yeah, no subjects anywhere. Now, "omou" can also mean "to miss", and "taisetsu ni suru" means "to cherish", so "taisetsu ni omou" could mean "to miss dearly", but also "to consider important/valuable" or "to treasure". Who/What is doing these things to whom/what? Is it the singer to the petals? Is this an impersonal thing, i.e. «The more one misses someone, the more it makes them sad»? Is it the singer to the song's addressee? Everything is possible, but to tie this to the previous line and avoid having the singer love the petals dearly when all this time she's been reminiscing about the addressee, I'm going for this being her missing the addressee and feeling sad that he's not with her.
  • 14. Or "everyone is lonely". "mina" can mean "everything" or "everyone", and "kodoku" can mean "lonely/alone" or "solitude/loneliness". This could either be a very pessimistic "Whatever you do you'll always be lonely/alone" or a more semi-positive "Everyone is lonely/alone sometimes", though the semi-positive doesn't contrast much with the next line.
  • 15. Lit. "I cannot exist without looking for someone", where "-zu ni wa irarenai" is the standard Japanese way od translating "cannot help but …". Btw, this is almost certainly anastrophe, since otherwise "Someone who can't help but look for [?]" is lacking a verb and subject, since "someone" is marked as object. And of course, the subject "I" in my translation is my guess. It could still be the people that are looking for someone. I prefer to see this as the singer saying "Despite what others say, I still can't stop looking for a companion, but then I end up chasing ephemeral things because I love you and you alone".
  • 16. Or "in the city that changes colors".
  • 17. Or "we".
  • 18. Or "the promise", the same of verse 2, as the German translation here goes for.

I tried to translate the first stanza, but it looks relatively difficult.

If I could have met you,
I'll never let go of your hand again.
Hanamido(flower cathedral) signals the end of spring.
A petal of flower hazes.

Yes, dictionary says "grow hazy [dim]; be misted; be blurred."
I think in this case, flower is misted, moistened, wet.

If you look at Kasumi(霞み) in dictionary, you will find (a) haze; (a) mist.
so, I chose the word "haze" for it.

so, blur should be used when they are talking about eyes. not flower.

Maybe it's wilting and so petals are losing their colour and turning grey like mist? Or they've been left for so long that they've been coated with something that looks like it?
I say this because it says the temple is used to celebrate Buddha's birthday on April 8th, and the end of spring might be the end of May, which means it's been nearly 2 months since they used it.
And having abandoned the flowers in such an unnatural place, that's enough time for them to start wilting away or dust/mist/dew to start building up on them

So, this case is (1). Whereas you selected (2).

I don't know much about Hanamidou either. It seems small cathedral or small temple for flower. I think it's similar to small temple you often find in Thailand. I'm not pretty sure about this.

Google says "floral altar".

Sense 1, «物がぼやけて見えなくなる», aka «Things grow blurry/dim and become impossible to see». Sounds like what I was envisioning: the singer's eyes _kasumu-sense-2_, therefore the petal _kasumu-sense-1_. Only for the singer, of course. And not just the petal.
We've also got [@floomie]'s idea of the petal losing colour because it's the end of spring which is much later than when the Hanamidou is set up (April 8), so they're kinda withering away and becoming less bright in colour, which makes it grey/white like mist. That\s definitely an option because it would be explaining how the Hanamidou is announcing the end of spring.

So I forwarded the issue to Quora, and Hara Shidho (https://www.quora.com/In-Mai-Kurakis-Japanese-song-Time-after-time-there...) tells me we have two layers to this: on one side, the petal is indeed blurring up because of the singer's tears, but on the other hand there is a reference to "hana kasumi", the hazy appearance of cherry blossoms in the distance.

Wouldn't it make more sense if, in l. 2, we're talking about a single memory, which is the voice heard in the wind from l. 1? 冴返る seems to mean "to be cold and clear", so «I can hear your voice in the wind, / A distant memory over which thin ice is cold and clear»; Let's see what Stack Exchange told me ages ago (https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/18201/memories-and-freezing...): saekaeru is a compound of saeru, referring to piercing brightness or sharp cold, and kaeru, which means "all over, throughout" or "again" as the second part of a compound verb; so one could render this line as «A distant memory frozen over by thin ice»;
2. Couldn't we make "kimi" the subject of "chikatta", taking what follows as the words of this promise as well as the words said by the voice heard in the wind?

I think he should include the word "vivid".

My other dictionary says, Saekaeru means, "be perfectly clear."

My dictionary says saekaeru can mean either "be clear" or "be cold". It is true that "a distant memory shrouded in ice" doesn't directly translate saekaeru, but with "be cold" you move to "freeze", and if it's shrouded with ice it means ice has frozen over it.

because crimson seems to mean "deep red". Pale deep red sound funny. Pale pink is better.

My dictionary (JEDict) says:

冴え渡る (saewataru): ① to be clear ● to be distinct ● to be precise ② to be skillful ● to be skilful ● to be deft ③ to be well-executed ④ to get cold ● to freeze over
冴え返る (saekaeru): ① to be very clear ② to be keenly cold ● to be cold and clear

Looks like saekaeru.1 is a more intense version of saewataru.1 (though there may be some ambiguity as to what is meant by "clear"), and saekaeru.2 is a more intense version of saewataru.4. Taking saekaeru to mean saewataru.4 here, we'd have «A distant memory frozen over with thin ice».

It's curious how I looked up the Kanji for beniiro and one of the results was 深紅色 [しんこうしょく: SHINKOUSHOKU] scarlet ● deep crimson, "deep deep red", huh? Regular smile Anyway yes, I guess pale pink or light pink is a good idea, since it refers to cherry blossoms (cfr. two out of three answers to https://www.quora.com/In-Time-after-time-Hana-mau-machi-de-by-Mai-Kuraki...). Also, 薄紅 without -iro means "light pink, light crimson" according to JEDict.

About the first verse, after reading what you sent I feel the first 4 lines is a mere introduction, only vaguely connecting to the rest of the song

The first 2 lines contrast the next 2 in a pretty odd way as we've established, so perhaps hes talking/thinking to himself, indirectly giving information about what physically happened with him and this girl?
Maybe he's regretting allowing them both to say goodbye in the spot that's described next
So the next 2 paint more of a visual picture; this was on Buddha's birthday in April, maybe in front of a shrine or altar with cherry blossoms in the distant mist
But they also say that now he's back reminiscing, it's different, the Hanamidou now "marks the end of the spring"
Im not sure how it marks it tho, so unless we come up with something better i'm sticking with something like what I said before
That after not being used for so long, the spring flowers decorated on it are slowly dying, and giving way to the new flowers and events of the summer
And the petals of the hazy blossoms are blurred in his tears

Its a bit of a reach and probs wrong XD but i think its pretty cute thinking about it this way so i thought i'd share

Anyway 1. Yea i believe it's one distant memory that's described in the lines that follow. I doubt the voice is exactly the oath, but i do think it's part of the memory and what causes it to revive

2. With the rest of the verse? I personally dont think so. Ill show you my translation and then talk about it a bit more

In the wind your voice is heard
And that distant memory becomes clear as day under the thin ice
Where with no fear of getting hurt, I swore to you with a smile
"I shall happen across you someday, in this place again,
on the day the season of light pink blossoms comes to us once more"

The first line's simple to translate, but afterwards is where it gets a little ambiguous again
On the 2nd line, furigana specifies that 薄氷うすらい is being used as the poetic term, which means that it's more of a metaphor than actual ice
So maybe this means he has blocked away this distant memory as if putting it over a thin sheet of ice, but her voice carried by the wind reveals it again vivid and clear from underneath.
Also in uji's dictionary reference it includes 光 and 音色, light and timbre, in what can "become remarkably vivid", so with all this, freezing over can't be the definition

Then we have 3rd line, which is what makes me believe it's the man swearing the oath
"Without knowing any fear of getting hurt" is a pretty personal clause
It could imply that it was his first love or that he was so infatuated he forgot about being hurt
But can it say anything about how she felt or what she did? The lyrics surely can't know if that was her situation
He can't have asked; by asking her if she knows the fear of getting hurt, she will know such fear and will probably feel it as shes saying such a strong oath.

And then the rest of it is about this memory. I was about to make a mistake and say 薄紅色の季節が来る日に describes the location of the memory XD but looking at it again, が来る tells me your initial translation is likely right and that its in the promise
笑顔で is a bit more unclear; I translated it as the way he says the oath but it could be part of it as well, saying that he shall meet her with a smile when the time comes

Sorry for the really long and probably confusing post Cry smile I've dissected songs in this way before but i usually dont comment on translations so trying to express my thought process is very new XD

About the Hanamidou and petals: I added a part to https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/18199/petal-from-a-misty-fl... where I put forth the idea that we have hana-kasumi, withering petals, and the tears. Let's see what, if anything, comes out of there (the edit should have bumped it up in the home).

Also, IIRC, the context this song is applied to is a meeting in childhood, so maybe this is just childish naïveness? Food for thought, I guess. It could also be that the subject for both shirazu and chikatta is "we".

As for saekaeru, I never thought of giving it the memory as the subject. I always thought it was the usurai that was the subject of saekaeru. Of course, with no particle, both are possible. I thought no translation did that, but there's a Chinese translation that renders this as 如薄冰般寒冷遥远的记忆 «distant memory/ies as cold as thin ice». Another one has 清澈的薄冰 那遥远的记忆 «Clear thin ice distant memory/ies». Yet another has 遥远的记忆冰般澄澈 «Distant memory/ies is/are clear as ice». So Chinese translations seem pretty unanimous. English has the freaking Animelyrics with «The thin ice freezes back over [2] long ago memories» (note 2 being «Kuraki uses some obscure 'kigo' (seasonal phrases) in this song. 'Saeka(h)eru' refers to the weather getting chilly again in early spring after a period of warming, so in this line, I translated it as the thin ice (ie, over a pond/river) freezing back over. Kuraki said in an interview that she wanted to evoke an idea of early spring with these words.») and the other translation with «I can hear your voice in the wind / Bringing back a distance memory / Even the thin ice», so apparently the voice in the wind brings back the ice, hmm, not buying that. The Thai here is unusable: «Even the distant memories came back». The German here has «Eine dünne Eisschicht legt sich auf die weit entfernte Erinnerung.», or «A thin slab of ice places itself on the far-away memory». I guess we should listen to the Chinese :).

Or maybe watch the Detective Conan movie this was (I believe) made for to see if it gives us context.

Oh i thought it was a romance XD If its a childhood meeting then i agree that kind of innocence is probably the reason

And after reading a bit more about 冴返る, we all seem divided on those 2 meanings, but may I suggest that they're both being combined in a double entendre?
We've already seen that happen with 霞む so I dont think its wrong to expect it again. And うすらい is a poetic word for "thin ice" so there's likely some sort of metaphor or simile anyway.
I also found a word, 春寒しゅんかん defined as "A cold that has occured again after the first solar term of spring". Very in line with the 季語 meaning of 冴返る.
What I'm saying is that the first meaning is the one that makes actual sense, but the second meaning evokes that "idea of early spring" that Mai intended. So perhaps they're to be put together?

This is pretty difficult to put into words tho Confused smile perhaps "That distant memory becomes as clear as day under the thin ice, like the cold in spring that suddenly returns just when you feel it's gotten warm again" So just when he thinks he's over that meeting, the wind brings her voice to him and revives the memory

The childhood thing is because I was trying to superimpose it to Detective Conan movie 7, where the side story is Hattori Heiji, a detective, has fallen in love with a girl he saw playing in his childhood. The problem with superimposing the two is that in the movie the two have only "met" that one time, and the girl didn't even know about Hattori. Indeed, Hattori didn't even know her name, and only eventually recognised her in Kazuha, another character in the movie. And didn't even tell her she was that girl. Also, someone on Quora suggests that the "I" in the song may actually be waiting for the "you" to reincarnate as they were parted by death, which makes the song a whole heck of a lot darker :), and probably means the "kizutsuku kowasa" is fear of being literally wounded, not psychologically. In which case the subject is probably "we". Definitely not "I", since the one who got stabbed would be her.
Maybe what is being implied after usurai is "no you ni" rather than "no shita ni" or however you say "under". Maybe «A distant mamory turning clear and cold as thin ice in spring»? (The distant memory is still the voice)

I think "saekaeru" (冴返る、冴え返る)has 2 meanings.

I think, this song's case is (1)光・音色などがひときわあざやかになる。Light, sound, etc. become remarkably vivid.
I don't think this song is about the cold is coming back.

Now for some comments.

----1: Kasumu----

Kasumu hana hitohira is simultaneously "A flower blurs up" in my eyes because of tears brought by memories, and a reference to "hana kasumi", the "flower mist", i.e. the fact cherry blossoms look kind of like mist from a distance.

----2: Yomigaeru etc----

Not sure whether my translation is correct: should I make that "The song of my memories comes back to life, soft even now, in my heart"? [EDIT Considering it's set to music with a clear pause after yomigaeru, I guess it's more likely the intention was to have "omoide no uta" as a single thing separated from yomigaeru, so "The song of my memories comes back to life etc.".] Also, memory or memories? If we try to superimpose the Hattori Heiji - Kazuha side story of "Detective Conan: Crossroads in the Ancient Capital" with this song, it would be one single memory, but the superposition doesn't work too well, because the only meeting of those two was him seeing her playing, so while it would make this a single memory and the song "Kyouto shinai no toori", the parts about the promise and holding hands wouldn't work.

----3: Refrain 1----

This could also be translated as:

Time after time 君と出逢った奇跡 | Time after time, the wonder of meeting you,
緩やかな風吹く街で | The soft wind blows in the city,
そっと手を繋ぎ 歩いた坂道 | The hill we walked up while gently holding hands,
今も忘れない約束 | The promise I remember even now.

I think l. 2 is not to be translated this way, but the final two can equivalently be two remembered items or sort of a story.

----4: Saekaeru----

Saekaeru can mean "become very clear" or "turn cold right when you expect it to get warmer". Floomie suggested it could mean both here, as a double entendre. Hence the translation. Of course, one could argue as to what particle we imply between usurai and saekaeru: Usurai ga saekaeru "The thin ice turns cold and clear"? Usurai no shita de "A memory that turns cold and clear under the thin ice"? Or Saekaeru no you ni, whence my translation? Or maybe this is an anastrophe equivalent to 薄氷が遠い記憶の上にさえ返る, "Thin ice becomes cold and clear over my distant memory/ies"?

----5: Chikatta----

The superposition here would definitely force "I promised", but I'd tend to discredit that. I'm being told "you" is unlikely, but why? I mean, I have this interpretation of the voice in the wind being precisely her promising what follows the line with chikatta, which would create a strong link within the whole verse, but anyways.
The reason Floomie gives is that "not knowing the fear of being hurt" is not something you'd know about someone else: «The lyrics surely can't know if that was her situation. He can't have asked; by asking her if she knows the fear of getting hurt, she will know such fear and will probably feel it as shes saying such a strong oath», but maybe she just made the promise and he inferred this? Maybe they got to know each other well and he knew she was generally somewhat naïve? Or maybe this refers to a childhood romance of sorts? I think there is potential that she's the one promising.
And then Hara Shidho suggests they were probably parted by death, given the Buddhist motive (Hanamidou), and that he's waiting for her reincarnation. Wow that makes the song a hell of a lot darker! I don't see many elements to support this, but if that were the case, it's either her or both promising, because mentioning him not fearing when the one that got stabbed (kizutsuku in this very physical sense) is here would be strange.
Whatever the case, this is definitely the promise he still remembers (cfr. refrain 1).

----6: Chirazaru etc.----

Chirazaru is obviously a pun between them being separated and the blossoms having fallen and scattered all over the place. I could also translate this as «Although I will not [ever] go back to the time etc» (lit. «Speaking of the time etc, I won't go back [to it]»), what do you think?

----7: Kaze mau hanabira----

Here I could envision three ways to read this sentence:

1. 花びらが、水面を撫でる様に、風に舞う, The petals dance in the wind, seeming to caress the water's surface; this is what the English translations tend to give;
2. 風に舞う花びらが水面を撫でる様になる, Petals dancing in the wind come to touch the water's surface; this is what I did in the translation here, reading this as "when they touch it, they sink, and just like that, the more I think of you, the more I sink in pain";
3. 風に舞う花びらが水面を撫でる様に, Like petals dancing in the wind caress the water's surface; this was basically suggested by Chinese translations, and would be a direct comparison linking with the following line.

Which would you recommend?

----8: Taisetsu ni omou hodo setsunaku----

Or in Japanese spelling, 大切に想うほどせつなく. As painful as consider important / cherish. Who does what to whom/what? I'd suppose "The more I cherish you, the more I feel pain", where, with the direct comparison of the previous line, we'd have cherishing compared to dancing in the wind, and feeling pain compared to touching the water, so touching the water is as inevitable to the blossoms once they're in the wind as the pain is inevitable to him as he cherishes her. Or as he misses her, maybe. So poetic. Would you agree to this reading?

----9: Mina kodoku----

I'd say "hito", these people, are saying precisely "mina kodoku", but I could also read this as «All people / Everyone is saying "[I'm] lonely"». What would you recommend? Also, "everything is loneliness" or "everyone is lonely"?
