Tony Bennett - Fly me to the moon

Fly me to the moon

Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)
lyrics by Bart Howard
as performed by Tony Bennett
Poets often use many words
to say a simple thing.
It takes thought
and time and rhyme
to make a poem sing.
With music and words
I’ve been playing,
for you I have written a song.
To be sure that you know
what I’m saying
I’ll translate as I go along.
Fly me to the moon
and let me play
among the stars.
Let me see
what spring is like
on Jupiter and
In other words -
hold my hand.
In other words -
darling, kiss me.
Fill my heart with song
and let me sing
forever more.
You are all I long for,
all I worship
and adore.
In other words,
please, be true
in other words
- “I Love You”.

"Fly Me to the Moon" is a popular song written in 1954 by Bart Howard. It was originally titled "In Other Words" and recorded by Kaye Ballard the same year. The song has become a popular jazz standard. A bossa nova arrangement was composed by Joe Harnell in 1962. This version sold more than 500,000 copies, peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard's Nation's Top Tunes and won a Grammy Award for Best Performance By An Orchestra Or Instrumentalist With Orchestra. Bart Howard was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999 for this song.

Bart Howard had been pursuing a career in music for more than 20 years before writing the famous song. In a 1988 interview with The New York Times, Bart Howard explained "I've always said it took me 20 years to find out how to write a song in 20 minutes. The song just fell out of me. One publisher wanted me to change the lyric to 'take me to the moon."

"Fly Me to the Moon" has been recorded by more than 300 singers and orchestras in different languages, including twice by Frank Sinatra.
