I am a sociolinguist and I have been a professor of languages for many years. I am also a professional interpreter / translator for the Federal Courts. I currently teach French at the University of Alabama, but I have also taught Spanish (undergraduate: lower and upper division) for many years.
Currently, I am a PhD Candidate in Romance Languages: Spanish and French Linguistics, and my second language acquisition methodology is based on teaching sociolinguistically through the top music globally. I use the vocabulary and grammar of the song lyrics to put the language in context, and I provide my translation into English for my students (available on TeachersPayTeachers.com under "Lengua es Cultura"). I end every class with a music video!
My doctoral dissertation compares the sociophonetics and the codemixing of the top two global music artists, Bad Bunny and J Balvin, in their spontaneous speech and in their artistic performances between 2018-2020. (1) I will determine whether they are holding to their regional varieties in their /s/ pronunciation in their spontaneous speech and in their artistic performances, or moving to a new standard. (2) I will identify their Spanish-English codemixing practices and how they compare in their spontaneous speech versus in their artistic performances. (3) I will identify the Spanish-English-French lyrical codemixing that is occurring in the two artists' top popular songs versus the lyrical codemixing in other artists' top popular songs. I am a balanced bilingual (both native speaker and academic level) of English and Spanish. I am a near-native speaker of French (I lived there and half of my PhD coursework is in French). Varying proficiency (conversational, can translate to/from, and/or have studied): Italian, Penninsular and Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Gallego, Asturiano, Valenciano, pretty much anything in Western Europe except for German and Basque, and in the Americas except for Quechua.
Proud linguistics NERD; I love love love to dance salsa / merengue / bachata / cumbia / reggaeton / etc. I also ADORE Francophone music, especially out of Marseille and North Africa; I love to travel, explore, eat new vegetarian foods, cook; I love cultures, languages, and connecting people through language.
