I love poetry, music and their well-matched union in song. Translating poetry is a challenge to me. There are many difficulties. It is sometimes hard to find the right word. Languages often have a different ordering of words inside the sentence. Etcetera, etcetera.
Inevitably something gets lost in translation. My ideal is to stay as close to the original as possible. In my view explaining should be avoided in a translation, as it easily kills the magic. It can even lead to 'hineininterpretieren', adding an interpretation to the original. A translation must be clear, but don't underestimate your reader. I think rhythm is more important than rhyme.
Of course I respect different views and approaches.
Many years ago in grammar school I studied Latin and classical Greek, but that knowledge has now faded. Thanks to this education I also manage to translate from Spanish, Portuguese and modern Greek.
