Umbrella

My reflection in the mirror was transparent
If only I didn't know the things I understood

I am just the umbrella that protects you
From being drenched by the bothersome rain
It seems that is the fate I've decided upon
Unable to hope for anything, because I'm afraid of getting hurt

Even if I were to return to that day one more time
I would do it all over again, I probably would

If only the rain could continue to fall like this
I know I can't hope for it, but
If the rain that falls upon you stops; if you long for blue skies,
Then surely I will...

If I didn't know all these things about myself
Maybe I would be able to hope for a happier future

One snowy day, you closed me, and looked up at the sky
I'll never be able to touch your smiling face that seemed to be crying

Sad, beautiful memories
Are like a revolving lantern, the wishes flicker away
Before these ugly and real feelings become stronger
There must be the sickeningly radiant sun

Someone said my feelings I can freely choose
That's not true; I can't change that any more than I can my fate

If only the rain could continue to fall like this
I should understand that I can't hope for it
If the rain that falls upon you stops; if you long for blue skies,
Then surely I will...

The rain quietly lifts, and the umbrella is placed in the umbrella stand
It seems you forget even that fact that you've forgotten

Author's comments:

The lyrics of Umbrella, written by vocalist Fukase, use the personification of a vinyl umbrella to represent the feelings of girl watching over someone she loves. Like an umbrella, she protects the person when they are in difficult times, but as soon as the rain lifts, she is put away and forgotten (my interpretation).

On a TV show (CDTV Live), Fukase has also stated that these lyrics reflect his own emotions as the band approaches their 10th anniversary. Thus in the MV, Fukase himself is portrayed as the umbrella. Wink smile

This is also the theme song for the drama 竜の道 二つの顔の復讐者.

Please let me know if there is anything I should edit or if the context of this song might also be based on the drama!
I've also interpreted/translated other songs (on my profile), including Shuhasu, which is also in this album. I'd greatly appreciate it if you decide to check out their other music!

This is SEKAI NO OWARI's new song. They are a favorite band of mine ♥ and I think this song sounds hauntingly sad and beautiful, just like what they describe in the lyrics. I hope they receive more recognition for their music (❁´◡`❁)

I proofread the translation, and I have to say, you've done a great job~

I did get stuck on some sentences since Japanese doesn't always translate to English so that the sentence is 'exactly' the same. Yet, you had found a beautiful translation that still had the same feeling as the Japanese original. You really did a great job (◕ᴗ◕✿)

Thank you for your kind words!

This was actually my first time translating one of their songs and it was admittedly very challenging (as you said, it's quite difficult to find English equivalents for all the phrases). I still had a great time translating and it means a lot to hear that my efforts paid off!
